Elliott Loses Life In Missouri River The Missouri river claimed another victim on last Saturday afternoon when George T. Elliott, of this city, was drowned at his ranch about five miles east of town while trying to removed four or five head of horses from an island in the river. Mr. Elliott had gone to the ranch several days ago and his grandson, Jame McKenzie, was assisting him in trying to locate some horses. When they were found on the island Mr. Elliott went across the river in a shallow place and started the horses back, following them by the same route, instead of returning the way he had reached the island. According to the grandson, Mr. Elliott's horse plunged when only a short distance from the bank and both went under, coming up immediately and again going under. The last seen of the horse and Mr. Elliott was only a few feet from the bank. It is thought by those who have visited the scene of the drowning that his horse became mired in some quicksand and in struggling to get out lost control of his facilities for swimming, the horse carrying Mr. Elliott down with him, or that the horse in making the fight to get out struck Mr. Elliott and the drowning man held on to the reins which carried the horse under with him. The grandson returned immediately to Fort Benton and Sheriff Zimmer and Deputy George Rowe went at once to the scene but their efforts to locate Mr. Elliott's body were of no avail. Coroner Baumann went out with a force of volunteers and tried to drag the river but the current in many places was too swift to permit a careful search. Mr. Elliott came to Fort Benton in 1909 and engaged in the livery stable and feed business, which he has conducted ever since. "Scotty," as he was known to almost every resident of the county, was a great lover of horses and always kept one or more race horses in his barn or on the ranch and it was in trying to save one of the race mares that he gave up his life. Mr. Elliott leaves to mourn his early death the wife, two daughters, Mrs. James McKenzie and Mrs. Joseph Jenkinson, and one son, Frank Elliott, all of this city; and a number of grandchildren. Mr. Elliott was 59 years of age. The bereaved family have the sympathy of all in their great sorrow.
