Jenkinson, resident of Fort Benton since 1910, died at St. Clare hospital late Tuesday afternoon, July 23. She had been in failing health for more than two and a half years, entering that institution in Nov. 1960, following a stroke. She had been a patient there with the exception of about three months time at home, and in a Great Falls hospital where she was taken for special treatment. Joan Elliot was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George T. Elliot, born in Angus county, Scotland, on July 31, 1896. She came to this country with her mother, elder sister and brother in 1910. The father had come to the state a year earlier and they joined him here. After a short time in the Loma area, the family made Fort Benton their home. Here she met Joseph W. Jenkinson, who had come to this country from Cumberland, England, as a small boy. They were married in Great Falls in Nov. 1916. There were four children born to them, Frank, now of Spokane; John, deceased; Mrs. Agnes Brown, now of Minneapolis, and Mrs. Jennie Marelli, of New York City. The Jenkins operated an apartment house for many years and he was in the plumbing and equipment business, retiring in 1952. Mr. and Mrs. Jenkinson built a new home in the late 1950s where the latch string was always out, as it had been in earlier years. Following her hospitalization, Mr. Jenkinson became ill and died last August at the local hospital after some months there. Family members have come to visit the parents from time to time. For almost the entire period Mrs. Ann McKenzie, sister of Mrs. Jenkinson, has remained in this city to be near them and assist with care, and members of her family have made special visits. Both Mr. and Mrs. Jenkinson were members of the Christian church. She was for years active in the Sisterhood and in the Fort Benton Woman's club, in which organization she had charge of courtesy committee and favors to shut-ins for many years. Surviving are the son, Frank and family; two daughters, Mrs. Richard Brown, Mrs. Leonard Marelli; the sister, Ann McKenzie. One brother, Frank, died in 1951. The sister-in-law, Mrs. Jo Elliot, lives in Sand Point, Idaho. The Jenkinsons had the faculty of making friends and those who lived in their apartments never forgot the homelike contacts and interest in their welfare which "Joe and Joan" showed to each. Throughout her illness Mr. Jenkinson continued to receive word from those at a distance and many visited here to greet her. Friends over a wide area will grieve with family members in her passing.
