Truman Rowley, 68, long-time resident of the Fairfield community and former chief of the city fire department. He passed away at 11:47 a.m. at the Jefferson county hospital where he had been seriously ill the past several days. He had been in failing health since last October. The body is at the Hoskins funeral home where last rites are pending. Rowley served this community as a member of the fire department for well over a quarter of a century and as fire chief for 13 years. He first served on the department as a driver when Fairfield still used the horse-drawn fire apparatus prior to 1916. He later joined the department as a fireman in 1920 and continued as a member of the organization until he retired Jan. 1, 1949. During his long career as a city fireman Rowley battled some of the largest fires in this city's history, and it was during his term as fire chief that Fairfield took big strides in modernizing its fire fighting equipment. He also has another long record to his credit. He was employed at the Dexter company for 31 years in the inspection department. He was forced to retire from his work last fall because of his health. George Truman Rowley was born Oct. 27, 1883, at Richland, Ia., the son of Edward and Maggie McCumber Rowley. He moved to Fairfield when quite young and lived the rest of his life in this community. On July 10 this year he and his wife, the former Anna Bartz, celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary. Besides his wife, Rowley is survived by the following children: Mrs. Mildred Lynchard, Mt. Pleasant; Mrs Alice Pavley, Canton, Ill.; Mrs. Marjorie Worrell, Washington; George T. Rowley, Jr., Fairfield; Mrs. Enola Grouman, Sheboygan, Wis.; Robert Rowley, Burlington; Mrs. Mary TeBockhorst, Fairfield; and Mrs. Jean Wilson, Fairfield. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. J. D. Mitchell, Fairfield, ten grandchildren and the following half-brothers and sisters: Robert Mitchell, Fairfield; Mrs. Mildred Rehoboth, Delaware Beach, Del., and Mrs. Nellie Martin, Moline, Ill. *daughters Mildred and Alice were from George's first marriage to Fannie "Fanny" Cary Rowley.
