Description	:	Gerda Nielsen, the youngest of eight children of Peter and Dorthea (Ringsted) Block, was born on October 28, 1906, in Norre Kongerslev, Denmark. She was baptized there also. Gerda came to America with her parents and family in May of 1912. In January 1913, the family moved to a farm three miles north of Bostwick, Nebraska. Read More	Gerda Nielsen, the youngest of eight children of Peter and Dorthea (Ringsted) Block, was born on October 28, 1906, in Norre Kongerslev, Denmark. She was baptized there also. Gerda came to America with her parents and family in May of 1912. In January 1913, the family moved to a farm three miles north of Bostwick, Nebraska. Gerda's parents remained on this farm the rest of their lives. Gerda could not speak any English when she started to grade school at Sandy Knob District #81. Riding horseback was her main mode of transportation to and from school. She attended all eight grades at Sandy Knob and graduated from Superior High School in 1925. Gerda planned to teach school, but couldn't as she was not a United States citizen. She had to wait until she became of age to obtain her citizenship papers in January of 1928. She was confirmed in the Lutheran Church at Ruskin, Nebraska when she was 16 years old. On March 10, 1929, at her parent's home she was united in marriage to Peter Nielsen. This union was blessed with three children. Gerda was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, Church Circle and Abdal Club. She enjoyed crocheting and spent many hours in her beautiful flower garden. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Peter E. Nielsen, on May 17, 1984; her son, Gary K. Nielsen; four brothers, Andrew, Lawrence, Julius and Chris Block; one sister, Karen, and an infant grandson, Jeffrey Kay Nielsen. Survivors include two daughters, Phyllis Thayer and her husband, Max, of Republic, Kansas, and Marilyn Morehead and her husband, Garold, of Ord, Nebraska; daughter-in-law, Ilene Nielsen of Superior, Nebraska; one brother, Peter Block and his wife, Viola, of Superior; one sister, Christine Hanson of Deshler, Nebraska; 8 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; one great great grandson; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Gerda passed away March 7, 1993, at the Good Samaritan Center in Superior, Nebraska, at the age of 86 years, 4 months and 7 days. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 10, 1993, from Salem Lutheran Church rural Superior, Nebraska, with Pastor Michael Osberg officiating. Music was provided by soloist, Marsha Cline, singing "How Great Thou Art" and "Precious Memories". Congregational hymns of "Beautiful Saviour" and "Amazing Grace" were sung. Glenda Thayer was organist and accompanist. Casketbearers were Randy Thayer, Jay Nielsen, Andrew Shearer, Mark Morehead, Chad Shearer and Kaleb Brzon. Burial was in Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Superior. Megrue-Price Funeral Home of Superior, Nebraska, was in charge of arrangements. She was confirmed in the Lutheran Church, Ruskin, when she was 16 years old. March 10, 1928, she was united in marriage to Peter Nielsen. Three children were born to this union. Mrs. Nielsen was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, Church Circle and Abdal Club. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son, Gary K. Nielsen; four brothers, Andrew, Lawrence, Julius and Chris Block; one sister, Karen; and an infant grandson, Jeffrey Kay Nielsen.
