Description	:	Gertude was born in Gross Midlum, Germany, a small agricultural village about 8 minutes away from Pewsum in which her husband Henry was born. Her parents were Jan Janssen Brummer, age 33 and mother, Tjakobina (Bena) Odenga, age 30. Gertude's mother passed away at age 46 when Gertude was 16 years of age. Gertude was the last of the Brummer sisters to immigrate from Germany as her sister Marie Brummer Behrends remained in Germany. On June 2, 1894, just six weeks after her arrival to Iowa, Gertude married Henry Klever. Gertude's older sister, Hinrica, (Reka) married Henry Klevers brother, Harry Bert Klever around the same time. Twelve children were born to Gertude and Henry. All twelve were born in the same room on the farm. Two sons, Hilrich and Gerhardt, died within two to four weeks after their birth. Gertude was a good housekeeper who was known for wanting everything to be just right. Because she spoke broken English Gertude was uncomfortable attending school functions for her daughter's. Gertude maintained a large garden and raised concord grapes on her grape arbor. The family had an orchard with all kinds of fruit trees in it. Gertude and her children kept busy baking apple pies, picking and canning corn, and making sausages in which they strung together among lots of other homemaker activities. In 1931, Gertude became a widow at the age of 61 and 37 years of marriage to Henry. Gertude was 44 years of age when their youngest daughter, Theresa was born. Theresa was 17 at the time of her father's death. In 1934 Gertude traveled to Germany to visit her sister, Marie who was the only sibling who stayed behind when the family emigrated. Marie Brummer married Frederic Behrends, a jeweler. In 1936, her oldest son, Bert's wife, Jessie died and left behind two young daughter's, Eleanor and Henrietta. Their father, Bert had died in 1923 when they were very young. Bert had joined the Army and fought in World War 1. In 1918, Bert went overseas as a Private in Company B, 352d Infantry, 88th Division and participated in the Argonne region in eastern France. Bert fought in the battle of Chateau Thierry with the famed Rainbow Division. He was hospitalized a number of times in Europe on account of the mustard gas used which can affect skin, lung and eyes. Bert returned to the United States in May 1919 and married Jessie who he met while he was in the hospital. Jessie was an army nurse. The orphaned girls were fifteen and sixteen years then and came to live with their Grandma in Melvin, Iowa. In 1939, Gertude traveled to Germany again to visit her sister Marie. Gertude was a member of the American Lutheran Church until her death in March, 1953 at the age of 83.
