The young men's father, Barth Dircks CLUVER had died seven years earlier in 1878 in Pewsum Germany at age 53. Pewsum is located about about 268 miles from Germany's capital, Berlin. The young men's father, Barth Dircks CLUVER had died seven years earlier in 1878 in Pewsum Germany at age 53. Pewsum is located about about 268 miles from Germany's capital, Berlin. Henry was 18 years of age at the time of his father's death. The men's mother remained in Germany. The two brothers were on their own when leaving their homeland and arriving to their new homeland. Henry settled in Iowa and purchased land which at the time only had one house which was built of mud. Eleven years went by and in April, 1894 his future wife, Gertude, with her five year old daughter, Albena, immigrated through Ellis Island and took the train to Sibley, Iowa. Henry, age 37 married Gertude, age 24 on June 2, 1894, just six weeks after her arrival to Iowa. Henry and Gertude became parents to ten children ( six sons and four daughters ). Their firstborn, Bert, fought in the army in WW1. Bert went overseas in 1918 as a Private in Company B and fought in the infantry in the battle of Chateau Thierry with the famed Rainbow Division. As the family grew, Henry built additional buildings on their farm and years later their farm was designated as a Century Farm by the State of Iowa. The farm had many kinds of fruit trees and a large garden across the road from the house. The children spoke German at home until they attended school. Henry gave one acre of his first 80 acres in 1890 to get the school started. The school was built one half mile east of the farm. All the Klever children attended Lincoln Township District 3 country school through eighth grade. Henry played an accordian and their home held an organ in the front room. The family enjoyed music and owners of a Victrola phonograph that had a horn in which the sound came out of. On Sundays the family listened to records, mostly snappy marching music. The boys would put ropes around the record player and raise it to the haymow for square dances. Other times the family would travel to Lake Okoboji , which was about 35 miles from their home, to spend time at the lakes. They would proudly travel with an American flag on the hood of their car on patriotic holidays. On February 28, 1926, Henry and Gertude Klever purchased a house built by Henry Bangert on Lot 5, Block 15 in Melvin, Iowa. Freda, Marie and Theresa moved to town with their parents. Their second born son, Martin Klever married Hazel Smith and stayed on the farm when his parents moved to Melvin. Henry would walk the three miles to the Klever homestead at harvest time to keep an eye on things. Before passing away in 1931, Henry had purchased a farm for all of his sons and set each of them up for farming. Henry was married to Gertude for 37 years and at the time of his death she became a widow at age 61. Their youngest child, Theresa, was 17 years at the time of Henry's death as Henry was 57 years of age when Theresa was born. Blessed be his legacy to his wife, ten children and grandchildren.
