Tinker, 99, a lifelong Long Beach resident and daughter of pioneers, died at home on Thursday, November 22, 1979. She was born March 8, 1880 to Alfred and Mary Baker, peninsula pioneers who had a farm northeast of Long Beach off what is now Sandridge (Peninsula) Road. Lottie and her deceased husband, Gilbert, were well known as the owners and operators of the Clover Cottages for about 60 years. Gilbert was the town's first Mayor in 1922 and died January 10, 1959. Lottie's parents donated property to develop the Long Fir Cemetery northeast of Long Beach. She grew up on the farm and in her early years helped her mother cook her popular "chicken cream" dinners for travelers, guests and visitors. Lottie was one of 12 children and they all pitched in the help. Gilbert, who was brought up a mile and a half away in the "city," married Lottie on September 10, 1902. Gilbert's parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.H. Tinker, owned and operated the old Tinker Hotel in downtown Long Beach. H.H. Tinker was the pioneering founder of Long Beach, having platted the town in 1880, as the future Tinkerville. Gilbert and Lottie established their home near 4th South and Oregon where they operated the Clover Cottages, well known for cottage names such as Love Nest, Honeymoon, Umatilla and Wallula. Gilbert worked as a carpenter, with Lottie in charge of much of the day operation of the cottages. Lottie shared the hobbies of her husband Gilbert who often went steelhead fishing and beachcombing. In a real way Lottie was "first lady" to the town, local Presbyterian Church and the community as she always was ready to open her home or cottages to visitors and friends. Lottie and Gilbert were well known for their colorful garden and "blue bottle tree," a collection of decorative blue bottles hung from limbs of a tree. Lottie kept the bottle tree tradition after Gilbert died and then moved with her daughter Lolita to their new home facing 4th and Washington Avenue on the same property. Mary and Alfred Baker donated property for the Long Beach Community Church on Washington Street. Lottie, living so close to the building, later became the "keeper of the key" as she was called upon to let people in to the church for cleaning, service preparation and other activities. She was also active in work within the church herself. Mrs. Tinker was a member of the Ocean Beach United Presbyterian Church at the Peninsula Church Center in Seaview, the Order of the Eastern Start in Ilwaco, the Shoalwater Chapter of the Daughters of the Pioneers, charter member of the Ladies Aid Society of Long Beach and the Neighbors of Woodcraft. Survivors include a brother, C.R. "Bub" Baker of Long Beach; a daughter, Lolita Morris of Long Beach; a granddaughter, Pat Shier of Edmonds; and a great grandson Scot, a Cadet at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the Peninsula Church Center in Seaview with Rev. George Lacy officiating on Saturday, November 24, 1979, 11AM. Interment followed at Long Fir Cemetery.
