Survivors include two sons, Donald Messer of Johannesburg, South Africa, and Dennis Messer of Burlington; nine grandchildren; three brothers, Emmett Messer of Yarmouth, Carl Messer and Melvin Messer, both of Mount Pleasant; and two sisters, Joanne Stahly of Lincoln, Neb., and Vera Ensz of Bettendorf. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one son and one granddaughter. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Wednesday at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Messer will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. James Messer officiating. Burial with military rites by American Legion No. 58 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2561 will be in White Oak Cemetery in rural Rome.
