Came to Montana About 63 Years Ago With His Parents Gilbert Embleton, for about 63 years a resident of Chouteau county, passed away at Long Beach, Calif., on Saturday, Feb. 24th, according to word received by relatives here. He suffered a sudden heart attack. He had been in rather poor health for the past two years and had suffered previous heart attacks. Mr. and Mrs. Embleton left here Jan. 13th and were visiting their daughter, Cpl. Dorothy Embleton, stationed at Long Beach with the WAC, at the time of his passing. The remains were cremated and the ashes will be brought back to Fort Benton by Mrs. Embleton who will arrive later this week. Cpl. Dorothy Embleton is expected to accompany her mother home. Funeral rites were conducted in Long Beach on Tuesday. There will be a Masonic funeral here. Gilbert Embleton was born in New Brunswick, near St. John's, Canada, Aug. 25, 1878, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Embleton. The family came to the states when Gilbert was three years old and came to Fort Benton by the steamboat "Red Cloud". He was the eldest of 12 children. They homesteaded the old Embleton home ranch toward Teton station. He attended the Teton school and remained on the home ranch helping his father and brothers who were engaged in raising both cattle and sheep, until about 1917. On Oct. 23, 1917, he married Miss Sadie Birmingham, of Hammond, Wisconsin, at her home there. Miss Birmingham had been employed for several years in the T. C. Power & Bros. dry goods department in this city. Mr. Embleton continued in the stock business, raising cattle, and occasionally some crop aside from hay, such as sugar beets, moving to what is known as the Green Roof ranch, which is up the Teton from the old home ranch. This had been purchased by the Embletons from E. F. Browne. The family has resided there continuously since. Mr. Embleton was one of the members of the county draft board and belonged to the Masonic lodge here. He was also a member of the state Cowboy's association and in the early days was one of the top cowhands, as a young man being a roundup boss for the Barbwire outfit. Those roundups were conducted until the early 1900s. In years around 1908 he served as deputy county assessor. Three daughters and a son, together with the wife, survive him: Cpl. Dorothy Embleton, Long Beach; Mary Embleton, who is attending college at Bozeman; Frances Embleton, teacher at Promised Land school in this county; and Bill Embleton, who is on the ranch. There are two sisters living, Mrs. Ed Kelly of this city, Mrs. Alice LaFollette, San Diego, Calif.; one brother, Howard (Pete), Embleton of San Diego. A cousin, Roy Embleton, lives with the family and has been doing ranching with Mr. Embleton on a partnership basis. The passing of Mr. Embleton will be mourned by a large circle of friends throughout this county as he was well known and highly respected by all who knew him. In his death Chouteau county loses another of those sterling early-day settlers who did so much for the upbuilding of the county. The relatives have the sincere sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement.
