Description	:	Gladys Georgia Duey Baloun, the daughter of Charles and Mabel (George) Duey, was born on her parents farm one and a half miles west of Chester, Nebraska, on January 14, 1914. She passed away on March 24, 2004, at Blue Valley Lutheran Nursing Home in Hebron, Nebraska, at the age of 90 days, 2 months and 10 days. Gladys was baptized April 3, 1921, by Pastor Charles Burns, at the United Methodist Church in Chester, Nebraska, and was confirmed on October 2, 1927, by Pastor N.A. Martin. She was a member of the Chester or Hebron Methodist Church all her life. Gladys grew up on her parents farm west of Chester and attended 12 years of school in Chester. She then taughts at a rural school north of Byron. She was united in marriage to Henry Baloun on December 23, 1931. This union was blessed with two children, Carl LeRoy and Betty Jean. Gladys and Henry lived in Chester and then east of Hebron on a farm for several years. They moved in 1942 to Dalton, Nebraska, and she taught school there. Henry was drafted into the army so Gladys and her children lived in Belleville, Kansas, where she worked as a bookkeeper. They took up farming again by Stoddard until moving to Hebron. Gladys taught at a rural school southeast of Hebron for two years. She then was a bookkeeper at several businesses until joining the County Treasurer's office as a deputy for six years and then was County Treasurer. Gladys and Henry purchased the cafe at Gilead in 1961 and moved there until Henry passed away in 1969. In 1970 Gladys moved to Chester, Nebraska, to be by her mother. She was an Avon dealer for 20 years in the Chester area. Gladys held offices in her church, Women's Club, extension club and Chester Senior Citizens and was very active in all. She enjoyed quilting, playing the piano, crocheting, working crossword puzzles, playing solitaire, gardening and canning what she raised, watching baseball games, baking and decorating cakes. Her delight was in watching her grandchildren eat their own special small cake. The last few years of her life was in Hebron at assisted living and Blue Valley Lutheran Nursing Home. Gladys was preced in death by her parents, Charles and Mabel Duey; her husband, Henry in 1969; son, Carl LeRoy in 1986; two granddaughters, one great-grandson, one brother, John Duey; one sister Hazel in infancy, and one sister, Edna Koester. She is survived by her daughter, Betty Petersen and husband Berwyn of Hebron; daughter-in-law, Ruth Baloun of York; 10 grandchildren: Carol Ackerman of York; Wanda Driewer and husband, Dennis of Hampton; Mary Hallett and husband Richard of Lushton; Carl Baloun, Jr. of Cantrell, Iowa; Steve Baloun of Ong; Sue Watts and husband, Mark of Opie, Kansas; Dee Ann Petersen and husband, Wayne of Ruskin; Ken Petersen and wife, Janet of Carleton; LaRee Ahlers and husband, Roger of Belgrade; and Gail Petersen of Omaha; 23 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruby Baloun of Hebron, Bertha Carpenter of Stayton, Oregon, and Elsie Deenin of Coos Bay, Oregon; one brother, Raymond Duey and wife, Loetta of Belleville, Kansas; sister-in-law, Arlene Baloun of Belleville, Kansas; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Sunday, March 28, 2004 at the United Methodist Church with Rev. Warren Schoming officiating. Congregational Hymns were "Under His Wings", "Hymn of Promise", and "Victory In Jesus" with Kathy Kleveland as organist. Casket Bearers were Ken Petersen, Butch Ahlers, Wayne Petersen, Gail Petersen, Carl Baloun, Steve Baloun and Dennis Driewer.
