He died Thursday, Nov. 26, at the age of 78 years, 1 month and 22 days. One of eight children, he was born to Charles and Mabel George Duey, Oct. 4, 1909, on a farm near Chester. Sept. 1, 1931, he was maried (sic) to Minola Durham. She died in November, 1935. Dec. 30, 1937, he was married to Tessibel Norlund in Wayne, Kan. They lived and farmed in the Davenport community for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Minola, and an infant sister, Hazel. Survivors include his wife, Tessibel, a resident in the Good Samaritan Home, Nelson; two sons, Donald of McCool Junction and Staff Sargeant Paul of Hinesville, Ga.; two daughters, Mrs. Duane Coxbill (Verna) of Edgar and Mrs. Johnny Thornton (LoRee) of Bladen; 19 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; five sisters, Edna Koester of Deshler, Gladys Baloun of Chester, Mrs. William Baloun (Ruby) of Hebron, Bertha Carpenter of Stayton, Ore., and Mrs. Joe Deenin (Elsie) of Coos Bay, Ore.; one brother, Raymond, Haddam, Kan.; and many other relatives. Pastor Steven Tjarks officiated and burial was in the Edgar Cemetery. He attended school in Chester and was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church. On September 1, 1931, he was married to Minola Durham. She passed away in November of 1935. On December 30, 1936, he was married to Tessibel Norlund in Wayne, Kansas. They lived and farmed in the Davenport community for many years. John had many friends. He enjoyed helping elderly people with errands. His hobbies included hunting, fishing and feeding wild birds. He enjoyed horses and farming. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Minola, and an infant sister Hazel. He is survived by his loving wife, Tessibel of Nelson; two sons, Donald and his wife Jan of McCool Junction, Nebraska, and Staff Sargeant (sic) Paul and his wife Judy of Hinesville, Georgia; two daughters, Verna and her husband Duane Coxbill of Edgar, Nebraska, and LoRee and her husband Johnny Thornton of Bladen, Nebraska; 19 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; five sisters, Edna Koester of Deshler, Gladys Baloun of Chester, Ruby and her husband William Baloun of Hebron, Bertha Carpenter of Stayton, Oregon, and Elsie Deenin and her husband Joe of Coos Bay, Oregon; one brother Raymond and his wife Loetta of Haddam, Kansas; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Funeral services were held Monday, November 30, 1987, at 2:00 p.m. from the Community United Church of Christ in Nelson Nebraska, with Pastor Steven Tjarks officiating. Music was provided by Verna Kruse and Blanche Statz singing a duet of "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In The Garden" with Jan Schnitker as organist and accompanist. Casketbearers were Ken Adams, Terry Tausch, Randy Tjarks, Mike Rieger, Todd Thornton and Chad Thornton. Burial was in the Edgar Cemetery. Klawitter-Price Funeral Home of Nelson, Nebraska, was in charge of the arrangements.
