Description	:	Big Timber Pioneer, church bulletin Gladys Stephens went to be with her Lord and Savior on June 28, 2010. She was born November 28, 1919, during a bad snowstorm in a log cabin on Dugout Ranch to Norwegian immigrants Olufine and Sven Stenberg who came to the US in 1910. After graduating from Sweet Grass County High School in 1938, Gladys went to Eastern Montana College where she got a 2-year teaching certificate. She went back to summer school for many years until she got her Bachelor's of Science degree in elementary education in 1963. In 1940, Gladys began her teaching career at West White Beaver School where she had 8 students. She married Norman Peterson of the White Beaver area in June of 1941. She had 2 children from this marriage, Marvin and Betty. In June of 1947, Gladys married the love of her life, Oscar Stephens who adopted Marvin and Betty. In 1958, a son, Jim was born. In 1948, Gladys and Oscar along with his brother Art started Stephens Auto. Marvin and Jim took over the family business where they both still work. Gladys' teaching career included teaching at the Old Boulder School in 1947-1948, Dry Creek School 1949-1950, and Rapstad School 1951-1956. She taught at the Big Timber Grade School for 23 years retiring from teaching in 1984. Gladys' hobby was doing Hardanger, a Norwegian stitchery. Gladys was involved in the Lutheran Church, Sons of Norway, Retired Teachers, Delata Kappa Gamma, Women's Club, and Dorcas Circle. She enjoyed her house, her garden, her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren during her retirement. Gladys was preceded in death by Oscar, her husband of 29 years, her daughter Betty, her parents, sisters Signy Kirchner and Frances Hendricks and her brothers Otto and Stanley Stenberg.
