Burial will follow the service at the East Line Street Cemetery. Born Sept. 22, 1918 in Milaca, Minn. to Otto and Clara Leverson, Gordon died of natural causes in Bishop on March 9, 2009. He was 90. The descendant of Norwegian immigrants, raised the second youngest son in a family of 12, Gordon was the last of his "Iowa" family to pass on. Gordon was raised in Rock Creek, Iowa where his parents owned and worked a corn farm. An active athlete, he attended a one-room schoolhouse through the Depression years and graduated from high school in 1936. After working in the grocery business for some years, he moved to Southern California and worked for Ralph's Grocery and Lockheed Aircraft, respectively. Entering the United States Army in 1942, he was promoted to Sergeant in the 763rd Tank Battalion Company B. As a Tank Commander, he participated in the Hawaiian Island Defense, the Liberation of the Philippines and the Invasion of Okinawa. Honorably discharged in September of 1945, Gordon was awarded a Good Conduct Medal, a Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars and an Asiatic-Pacific Medal during his time in service to his country. Upon his return to Southern California, Gordon entered the employ of Republic Motion Picture Studios and later was hired by Universal Pictures. He worked in the transportation department at Universal Studios until his retirement in September 1983, a total of 38 years. During his tenure at Universal Studios he gained the acquaintance of many motion picture notables. Gordon met Sylvia Mary Barnes of Burbank on June 30, 1946. Wed on Aug. 24, 1946, they were married for 61 years. The Leversons raised their children in Burbank, participating in much the community had to offer. The family attended Emmanual Evangelical Free Church. Gordon and his wife moved to Bishop in 1989, where they enjoyed the beauty of the outdoors, fishing, camping, bowling, solitaire card games, their children, grandchildren and the fellowship of the Bishop Nazarene Church. Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Leverson; son, Chris Leverson and wife, Christy, of Burbank; daughter, Clare Mottweiler and husband, Marston, of Bishop; grandchildren, Ben Mottweiler and wife Laura, of Big Pine, Diana Whitney and husband, Jake, of Banning, Kelsey Calderon and husband, Josh, of Santa Ana, Taylor Mottweiler and wife, Vicki, of Ventura, and Regan Leverson of Garden Grove; and one great-grandchild, Elexia Evelyn Whitney. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gordon's honor to the Benevolence Fund at Bishop Nazarene Church.
