Gordon Ruttman was born March 16, 1934, to Howard and Margery (Newhouse) Ruttman, rural Nelson, Nebraska. From the age of 8, he was raised by his grandparents, Frank and Calla Ruttman. Ruttman, 64, died Saturday, March 13, 1999, at his home following a long battle with cancer. Gordon Ruttman was born March 16, 1934, to Howard and Margery (Newhouse) Ruttman, rural Nelson, Nebraska. From the age of 8, he was raised by his grandparents, Frank and Calla Ruttman. He graduated from Nelson High School in 1952. August 16, 1953, he married Clara Whithorn at the Angus Church of Christ. To this union five children were born. Gordon was a life-time farmer and mechanic, living most of his life just a few miles from his birthplace. He was a long time member and leader of the Angus Church of Christ until it's closing. As a member of the Clay Center Christian Church, Gordon served as deacon, board member and general repairman. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and two brothers, Larman and Billy. Survivors include his wife, Clara; one son, Gerry and his wife Janet of Grand Island, Nebraska; four daughters, Cindy Wicke and Phil of Greeley, Colorado, Cheryl Green and her husband John of Clay Center, Nebraska, Carol Stancer and her husband Lew of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, and Connie Mathews and her husband Jason of Grand Island, Nebraska; one brother, Ron and his wife Dorothy of Elgin, Illinois; three sisters, Jeryne Goodrich of Hebron, Nebraska, Linda Hoins and her husband Darrell of Superior, Nebraska, and Lorene Drohman and her husband Marvin of Hebron, Nebraska; father-in-law, Clarus Whithorn of Edgar, Nebraska; and 14 grandchildren, Dustin Wicke and his wife Alicia of Los Angeles, California, Luke, Chandra and Tony Wicke of Greeley, Colorado, Heather, Brittany and Gerrod Ruttman, and Joshua and Cailey Mathews, all of Grand Island, Nebraska, Carissa, Cassidy and Levi Stancer of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, and Adam and Charity Green of Clay Center, Nebraska. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 16, 1999, at 10 a.m. at the Clay Center Christian Church with Pastors John Green and Loren Daly officiating. Music was "Victory In Jesus" and "How Great Thou Art", sung by the Kinsmen Quartet, Ed Barnes, Gaynor Smith, John Green and Wayne Johnson, with Nancy Schanbacher as pianist. Interment was in Nelson Cemetery. Pallbearers were Bert VonSpreckelsen, Bob VanSpreckelsen (sic), Wayne Moorhead, Ken Spray, Dale Livgren, Allen Wilkins, Gordon Shuck and Gene Ferebee. Klawitter-Price Funeral Home of Nelson and Superior was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may go to the Clay Center Christian Church or the family.
