After his mother's untimely death in a house fire, Gordon (at age 1) and his sister, Helen June (age 2) were raised by his maternal uncle and his wife, Ernest Franklin and Vera (Hattan)Smith. He married Velma L. Johnson November 24, 1953 at the Harvard Christian Church in Harvard, NE. He was a veteran of the Air Force and was employed by the Federal Aviation Administration as an air traffic controller. Gordon and his family last resided in Grand Island, NE. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Edgar. At the time of his passing he was survived by his wife Velma, three children, Gary, Susan and David, his adoptive father Ernest Smith of Edgar, one sister, Helen Forsman of Eureka, CA, half-siblings Vance L. Brown and Joan Fey Brown Dishman. He was preceded in death by his biological mother Blanch and brother Orville who died as an infant, and his adoptive mother, Vera Thelma (Hattan) Smith. Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 24, 1970 at the Church of the Plains in Edgar. Burial was in the Edgar Cemetery. Gordon died from thyroid (liver & colon) cancer.
