December 14, 1927 - Carroll Times - The community was saddened and shocked Wednesday afternoon, December 7, when word spread through the city that Miss Grace Dalker, R.N., had died suddenly at the home of W.W. Tregloan, while on duty as a nurse. When administering to some of the wants of her patient in the kitchen of the Tregloan home, she was taken with an attack of weakness and to steady herself sat down in a near-by chair, from which she slipped to the floor. Death was instantaneous and was caused by embolism. The entire community will feel the loss of this faithful nurse, who worked night and day when on duty. Many people of Carroll and vicinity realize that they owe their lives to her untiring efforts and gentle nursing. Her words of comfort to the family and her soothing hand upon the brow of the sufferer have done much when the strength of the patient was waning and the crisis was at hand. There was nothing which she could do to aid the sick one that she left undone. She was thorough and understood her work, taking that deep interest in her calling, which is so much admired and appreciated by the medical profession. She never failed to attend the state convention of the registered nurses of Iowa and could always be relied upon to represent her home city, Carroll. At the meeting in Ft. Dodge some weeks ago she was present and took the same vital interest in the meeting as was her custom. Grace Daiker, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Daiker, was born at Freeport, Illinois, December 11, 1865 When the little girl was five years old, the family moved to Iowa, locating on a farm three miles north of Carroll. After reaching young girlhood she made her home with the late Mr. and Mrs. John Nockels, Sr. and family, and for over 20 years was a member of their household. The Nockels home being without a daughter, she was given the kind consideration of one by Mrs. Nockels and the love and friendship between these two was very dear. After the death of Mrs. Nockels, Miss Daiker decided to take up nursing and entered the St. Anthony hospital in 1906 for a course in training. She was graduated in 1908 with the first class completing the course. For twenty-two years Miss Dalker worked in Carroll and vicinity at her profession, enjoying only brief rests. A pleasure trip to California, where she spent a winter, a similar trip to Florida and short vacation trips to the west and the Black Hills were the only times when she was not subject to the call of duty during these years. She knew what illness meant and had undergone two operations, which undermined her health, yet she never complained but was always thoughtful of others. Her home after the death of Mrs. Nockels has been with her sister, Mrs. Johu Goecke, who is not well and is almost prostrated with grief by the death of her sister, who was such a happy addition to her household. She was a devout member of the Catholic church and was also a member of the Catholic Daughters ot America and of the Nurses Alumnae association of the St. Anthony hospital. Besides her sister, she leaves tbree brothers, J.P. Daiker of Carroll; Peter Daiker of Carroll, and Fret W. Daiker of Greene, Ia. She is also survived by 16 nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. Funeral services were held at 9:30 o'clock Saturday morning at the St Lawrence church. The nurses of the city attended in a body and the church was filled with sorrowing relatives and friends. Burial was made in the Catholic cemetery.
