Read More	Grace Gourlay Nelson, daughter of Alexander and Henriette Gourlay, was born May 7, 1852, in East Hartford, Washington county (sic), New York, and died at the home of her son, Roy Nelson on February 5, 1938, in Nelson, Nebraska, being 85 years, 8 months and 27 days old. She received her early education at a country school and later at West Hebron Academy, having received a regent certificate from Albany, N.Y. She taught school for two years. She was united in marriage to Frank S. Nelson on February 15th, 1872. To this union five children were born: Carrie, Gourlay, Henriette, Roy and Lola. Three of these, Carrie, Gourlay and Henriette (Mrs. W.A. Rouse) having preceded her in death. After her marriage she and her husband lived at West Pawlet, Vermont, for five years and then came to Nebraska, on January 31st, 1878, and lived for a short time near Nelson; then moved to a farm four miles south and one half miles west of Nelson. There they lived in a sod house for a number of years, enduring all the hardships common to pioneer life in those early days, and she was always willing to help all whom she could and was often called upon to help where there was sickness, when a doctor was not available. In 1893 they moved to a farm north of Abdal where they resided for many years. Her husband, Frank S. Nelson, passed away in April, 1918. Always a great reader, she delighted in things historic and pleasant memories of her forbears were told to her relatives and near friends as she became more advanced in years. Her father, Alexander Gourlay, came from Scotland in 1835, when he was seveneteen years old. Her mother Henriette Taylor, was a descendant of Revoluntionary stock, having had three ancestors in the War of the Revolution, a great grand father and two great uncles. Two of her ancestors were selected by Anthony Wayne to help storm Stony Point. Her lineage extends back to the Mayflower. Mrs. Nelson was one of a family of six children, Robert, Carrie (Mrs. Seth Warren) Grace, James, Frank and George. Of these only George survives. Mrs. Nelson became a member of the Presbyterian church (sic) at Nelson, October 7th, 1900, and was a regular attendant at its services for many years and helped in and through the church in many ways, especially seeking to help the needy. In September, 1937, her health began failing as the weeks passed it was evident the earthly house would soon be dissolved. The cords of life were being loosed one by one, and on Saturday, February 5th, about 3:30 her spirit returned to God who gave it. She leaves to mourn her loss, two children, Roy Nelson and Mrs. Lola Harrington both of Nelson; nine grand children and five great grand children, and very many friends who learned to love her because of her fine Christian character and her desire to be a help to all with whom she came in contact. The last rites were held at the Presbyterian church in Nelson Monday afternoon at 2:30 with Rev. John Caldwell in charge. The choir sang Mercy, Beautiful Isle of Sonewhere, and Nearer My God To Thee. The pallbearers were: W.W. Hawley, I.J. Wehrman, W.E. Miles, P.A. Peterson, T.W. Cole and Madison Sage.
