Read More	Hannah Foster Carpenter was born in Hardwick, Mass., November 11, 1827. On May 7, 1857, she was married to Charles F. Peirce at Ware, Mass., where she lived until coming west. This union resulted in a family of six children, Charles F., who resides at Flandreau, S.D., William H. of Detroit, Mich., Mrs. James Kruse and James C. of this place and A.E. of Ewing, Nebr. One daugther died in infancy and her husband passed away here February 25, 1883. Her early education fitted her for a teacher and at the time of her marriage she was one of the faculty of the state normal school at Charletteville, Virginia. She was one of the first public school teachers in this part of the county and following the raids by the grasshoppers in 1874 and 1875, she taught in order to help provide the necessities for the family. She taught the first term of school in District No. 8, the district in which she lived, and this was held in one of the two rooms of the Peirce home, tables and benches being brought in every moring and carried out again at the close of the day. She also taught in Creighton a part of the year 1875. She had a general knowledge of household medicines and of nursing, and in the early days of the seventies when there were no physicians here, she made many trips to the homes of the settlers with her medicine chest, ministering to them and their children in times of sickness; and it was often stated these timely visits were without doubt the means of saving the lives of some who would have passed beyond. Many of these trips were made at night with an ox team, without any though of financial recompense. During the hard times that followed the grasshoppers, when the eastern states were sending "corn meal and clothes" to the "sufferers" several wagon loads of such "aid" was received at the Peirce home from friends in the East, to be distributed by her to the needy. Mrs. Peirce united with the Congregational church at Ware, Mass., in 1851 and to her death was a devout Christian. She became a member of the Congregational church here in 1873, during the first year of its history, and during her active life was an infulential member of all of our church societies, and took a prominent part in all of the affairs of this church, organizing the first Sunday School in the county in the year 1873. This Sunday School was held in a sod house on the homestead of the Rev. Charles H. Emerson, the first resident missionary here. When the original church edifice was erected, Eastern friends of the Peirce family were generous contributors and the bell now in the church tower was given by her former deacon and Sunday School teacher of Ware, Mass. For the last five years she has been an invalid, living at the home of her son, Jas. C. Peirce of this place, and although fully resigned to the will of her Creator, often expressed a desire to be called to her heavenly home. ...We wish to sincerely thank all those who so kindly assisted us during the sickness and death of our beloved mother.---C.F.
