Read More	Guttenberg Press, IA, Thursday, October 22, 1959, pg. 1, col. 7 YOUNG MAN LOSES LIFE ON RIVER GENE MOSER DIES AFTER BOAT MISHAP Companion Makes the Shore to Get Help HITS LOG A happy Sunday afternoon spin in a speed boat brought death to 26 year old Harold Eugene "Gene" Moser about 4 p.m. when the little nine foot craft struck a submerged object and capsized, apparently knocking Moser unconscious as he was thrown from the boat. Gary Parker, with Moser in the boat at the time, was able to swim to shore. The accident occurred near the Nivarel store on the Esmann Island north of Guttenberg and Parker immediately secured another boat and went to search for Moser, but unable to find him, summoned the Guttenberg Volunteer fire company. The search for Moser continued for an hour and a half with fireman and other volunteers taking part until his body was recovered by Clark Cleveland at a point not far from where the accident occurred. A valiant effort to revive Moser by "mouth to mouth" respiration was made by a young man identified as only "Mr. Welling", but Moser apparently had been in the water too long for the effort to be effective. The fact that Moser had apparently had been rendered unconscious in the accident was discovered when bruise and bumps were discovered on his head after his body had been recovered. Acting as coroner in the absence of Dr. E. E. Zehr, Justice of the Peace Rose Mary Tuecke summoned witnesses Monday and a verdict of accidental death by drowning was handed down. Witnesses included Fire Chief Ernest Pufahl, Sheriff Forrest Fischer, Owen Pufahl, Parker, Liliefeld, Howard Duwe and Dr. Zehr. Funeral services for Moser were held at 9:30 a. m. Wednesday from St. Mary's church with Rev. Wilford Kress, pastor of Immaculate Conception church at North Buena Vista, officiating. Burial was in the Guttenberg City cemetery in charge of the Tuecke funeral home with the following as pallbearers: Dean Moser, Nathan Moser, Robert White, Rodney Tangeman, Charles Finch and Robert Wolf. Moser was born August 21, 1933, in Dubuque, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Moser, Sr., well known farmers of the Osterdock community. On August 31, 1957, he married Catherine Hefel at North Buena Vista. For the past nine years, Moser had been engaged in farming with his father in the Osterdock community. Surviving Mr. Moser are his wife and two children, James Eugene, 17 months, and Mary Jane, age six weeks, as well as his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold E. Moser, Sr., and one brother, Louis D. Moser of Guttenberg. Also surviving is his grandmother, Mrs. L. D. Moser of Fayette.
