Death comes as the result of complications and was hastened by bronchial pneumonia, recently contracted. "Harley", as he was familiarly known to his host of friends, was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. E. N. Sterling, who were of this city's most prominent and respected families. He was 61 years of age at his passing. He was taken to Baltimore on Wednesday last in a serious condition and entered the Maryland University Hospital there on the same day, just two days before his death. Upon his death, the Lawson's Funeral Home was notified and went to Baltimore for the body, bringing it here on Saturday. It rested at the funeral home until the hour of the funeral Sunday. Mr. Sterling was a man of many fine traits and among his most endearing characteristics was his eternal cheerfulness and his ready smile was familiar to the large circle of friends, of which he could boast. His was a congenial nature and all who knew him immediately loved him. He was a born musician and followed this art, at which he was very adept, throughout his life. In his younger days he was prominent in various community bands and the latter part of his life was devoted to the teaching of music. Prior to his serious illness, he was at the head of the music department of the Crisfield Youth Center, which is an NYA project and which is located in the old Gunby's College building, on the corner of First street and Columbia avenue. He loved his work and his pupils were very fond of hm. As a result he was highly successful in his line of endeavor. Surviving is an only sister, Mrs. Edith Maddrix, of this city. The large attendance and the many floral pieces at the final rites further showed this esteemed in which he was held. The funeral services were held from Lawson's Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m. Sunday with the Rev. J. R. Bicking, pastor of the Immanuel M. E. Church, officiating. Pall-bearers were Otis Ford, Edward Milbourne, Mayhew Nock, Nelson Lawson, Warren Sterling, Radie Sterling. Interment was in the Crisfield cemetery.
