Had Been Actively Identified With The Business Life Of Crisfield Since Its Earliest Days. Funeral Services To Be Held This Afternoon. (Friday) Mr. John E. Sterling, one of the pioneer residents of this city, and a man who for many years was actively identified with the business and social life of Crisfield, even in the early days of the town, died at his residence on Main street Wednesday evening, of a complication of diseases. Mr. Sterling was born in what is now Asbury district in 1849. He early became associated with the business interests of Crisfield, when the tow was practically built upon the water. He was associated with Hon. Thomas S. Hodson many years ago, in a business enterprise which was then the largest in the town. He later became associated with Hon. L.E.P. Dennis in a general merchandise business which continued for may years. He was Deputy collector of this port for some years, and filled the position of Fish Commissioner of the Eastern Shore of Maryland under the Lowndes administration, beginning in 1897. In the late years he was assistant postmaster at the Crisfield office, under the present postmaster, George C. Riggin, which position he filled until about four months ago, when failing health compelled him to relinquish it. Mr. Sterling had for many years been identified with church work in this city. He was a member of Immanuel M. E. church, the services of which he enjoyed whenever his health would permit his attendance. He was a member of Chesapeake Lodge, No. 147, A. F. & A. M., of which he served as Master some years ago. He attended its regular meetings up to within a few weeks of his death, taking an active interest and part in its affairs. The highest tribute that could be paid to Mr. Sterling is that he was, upon any and all occasions, a gentleman. His purse was always at the disposal of the needy. His heart was always large enough to entertain with compassion the shortcomings of his fellow man. He believed implicitly in the predominating influence of a Supreme Being, and his every act was in accord with the teaching of the Holy Scripture. From early manhood until the time when disease racked his once sturdy frame, his was an active life. From the time when Crisfield was little more than a name, he, believing in its future, backed up his faith with deeds. His was the kind of building that will last forever. As long as the city stands, from generation to generation, his memory will be with us, an incentive to the future greatness of the city, and a token of reverence and affection to its people. This community with one accord mourns with the bereaved family. A loving father, husband, friend, has been taken from them. A beloved citizen, a man of good deeds, a Master Builder, has been taken from us. Transplanted from this realm of sorrows to the Glory and Splendor of that City of Eternal Rest, we know, and there is much satisfaction in the knowledge, that his life of usefulness while ended here, will be a guide to future generations and a proper one for them to emulate. Funeral services will be held today (Friday) in the afternoon at the home of the deceased, Chesapeake Lodge A. F. & A. M., of which Mr. Sterling was a member, having charge of the ceremonies. The members of the Lodge will meet at the Lodge rooms at one o'clock, where the procession will be formed to proceed to the home. After the services there, conducted by the Rev. W. E. Habbart, pastor of Immanuel M. E. Church, the body of the deceased brother will be conveyed to his last resting place in the Crisfield cemetery, and there interred with Masonic honors.
