Bond, Sgt US Army, World War II Veteran, age 88, of Ida Grove, Iowa, died Friday, June 9, 2006, at Willow Dale Wellness Assisted Living in Battle Creek, Iowa. He was born May 21, 1918, in Ida Grove, the son of George and Emma (Worthington) Bond. He grew up on a farm northwest of Ida Grove where he assisted his parents with their farm operation. Mr. Bond was called to serve his country in 1942 during World War II. He was stationed at Uniongap, PA, where he met his future wife, Helen. He was a member of the Spearhead 3rd Army Division, which served in the European Theater. He was wounded and earned the Purple Heart while participating in the Battle of the Bulge, and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in 1945. On Nov 17, 1945, Harold was united in marriage to Helen Siska in Johnstown, Pa. To this union, 3 sons and 2 daughters were born. Harold worked in various steel mills in the Johnstown area until the love of farming called him home to Iowa. Mrs. Bond preceded Harold in death on Jan. 22, 1996, in Ida Grove; she was born in 1923. Upon his return to Iowa, Harold worked several years as a farm hand for Ed Perion before purchasing his first farm. He farmed in the Battle Creek, Arthur, Ida Grove, and Kiron areas before retiring and moving to Ida Grove in 1981. Harold was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove, where he served as an usher for many years. He also was a 50-year member of McNamara-Moore Post 61 of the American Legion, where he participated in many parades and was a member of the Color Guard. Harold will be remembered as an avid storyteller. His hobbies included fishing and camping, playing cards with his friends and family, and collecting miniature John Deere tractors. He truly enjoyed spending time with his family and loved visits from his friends and grandchildren. Survivors include 5 children and their spouses, David and Diane Bond of Renner, S.D.; Donald and Deloris Bond of Meridian, ID; Marie and Robert Baker of Ida Grove; Gary and Carolyn Bond of Adair, Iowa; and Theresa and Chuck Schumann of Battle Creek; 14 grandchhildren, Jeramiah, Jonathan, Jennifer, Jeanette, Joseph, Joshua, Jeffery, and Jeremy Bond; Lori Siebrecht, Marcy, Kyle, and Ryan Baker; and Brandon and Candace Daiker; several great grandchildren; a sister, Katherine Todd of Storm Lake, Iowa; as well as, extended family members and friends. In addition to his wife, Helen, Harold was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Iola Schultz and Lucille Peek; and 3 brothers, Gerald, Clifford, and Willard Bond.
