The story listed a number of the friends and neighbors by name) & Fairfield Ledger Friday Sept. 28, 1956 Pg. 8 Col. 5 McWhirter Rites Will Be Saturday Last rites for Harry McWhirter, former county official and well known auctioneer, will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Hoskins funeral home with Dr. C. R. Douglass in charge. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. McWhirter passed away about 12:30 p.m. Thursday in the Ottumwa hospital where he had been a patient since August 25. Prior to that time he had been a patient at the Jefferson county hospital. He had served as treasurer of Jefferson county for two terms, was secretary of I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 4, at the time of his death was a member of the Presbyterian church and had been an auctioneer and farmer during his life. He also operated a spray painting business in later years. Harry McWhirter, 61, was born February 7, 1895, in Jefferson county, the son of the late Robert and Sadie Crawford McWhirter. He was reared and educated in Jefferson county. He was united in marriage a second time to Johanna Esser, who survives. The wedding took place in Des Moines on March 17, 1942. Besides his wife, he is survived by the following children: a son, Robert McWhirter, Santa Monica, Calif.; one step-daughter, Mrs. M. F. Meek, Mason City; one step-son, Kenneth Esser, Fairfield. He is also survived by a brother, Ray McWhirter, and a sister, Mrs. Guy Fry, both of Fairfield, and three step-grandchildren.
