Discharged for disability Nov. 19, 1863. ------------- The 37th Iowa Infantry was unique among all regiments during the Civil War. It was the only regiment in which majority of recruits were over the enlistment age of 45. Its original purpose was to guard prisons and arsenals in order to free younger men for active battle duty. However, the 37th , did see some action while guarding supply trains and an attack by the notorious Nathan Bedford Forrest's Cavalry.
