They had known Strain children: Mary E., May 1870 to 1870, below Maggie Bell, 13 Aug 1871 (William Allen Brown), below William David, 24 Nov 1873, below Charles Howard, 14 Oct 1876 Noble, 1878 to 1878, below On the 1850 District 51, Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found farmer David Strain, 55; Maria Strain, 45; Susan Strain, 22; student David E Strain, 20; farmer James Strain, 19; Samuel Strain, 17; Elizabeth Strain, 15; Eusebius Strain, 13; HASTLELINE Strain, 11 and Rebecca Strain, 6, all VA born. Sadly, David, Sr. owned 6 black female slaves, ages 60, 27, 20, 17, 4 and 3. She is last on the 1860 6th Dist., Lexington P.O., Rockbridge Co., VA, with (son) farmer Jas A. Strain, 27; female "Wm T", 50 which is Maria T instead; Elizabeth, 22; HASELTINE, 21 and Emiline, 16, all VA born. On the 22 Jul 1870 Jackson, Van Buren, Iowa census, I found farmer John C Edmondson, 29, born in IN; "MARIA" A "wife of John C," 31, VA; Mary 1/12, born in May, in IA; Mary, 65, VA and farmer William J, 24, IN born. On the 1880 Milton, Van Buren, Iowa census, I found farmer John Edmonson, 38, born in IN; wife HASSIE Edmonson, 39, VA; daughter Maggie Edmonson, 8, IA; son Willie Edmonson, 6, IA; son Charles Edmonson, 3, IA and mother Mary Edmonson, 75, VA born. "Hazletine" and siblings are mentioned in the 18 Mar 1885 Staunton Spectator, Vol. 62, #27, Augusta Co. Circuit Court in James Y. McCutchan vs Peggy McCutchan el al (including the Strains through Hassie's mother). It's in Chancery for the sale of Elizabeth McCutchan's estate, to be divided by her heirs. On the 1900 Jackson, Van Buren, Iowa census, I found farmer J C Edmondson, 58, born Nov 1841, IN born; wife of 31 years, HASSIE A Edmondson, 60, Jan 1840, VA, had 5 kids, 3 living; sons: William D Edmondson, 26, Nov 1873, in IA and Charles H Edmondson, 23, Oct 1876, IA. On the 1910 Topeka Ward 3, Shawnee, Kansas census, I found Washburn College teacher, Charles Edmundson, single, age 34 and widowed mother HASSIE A Edmundson, 70, VA, had 5 kids 2 living. They lived on Mulvane Street. HASSIE STRAIN EDMONDSON, Mrs. John Edmondson, who has been so low for several months, passed away at the Woodward home, Monday morning. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, the funeral address being given by Rev. B.G. Hankins. Interment was made at the Oak Point Cemetery, north of town. July 24, 1916 - Hassie A. Strain was born in Rockbridge County Virginia on January 28, 1840. She was united in marriage to John C. Edmondson, February 9, 1869. To this union five children were born, four of whom preceded their mother in death. Deceased came to Iowa with her husband in 1869, settling on a farm north of Milton, where for most of her life, she has since resided. Her husband died in December of 1900. Mrs. Edmondson united with the Presbyterian Church early in life and has lived a faithful consistent Christian and passed away with full assurance of seeing her Savior face to face and meeting those that she had loved and lost a while. Deceased leaves to mourn her loss, one son, Charles H. Edmondson of Eugene Oregon; four grandchildren born to her daughter Maggie B. Brown, who preceded her mother in death by about six months; also one sister, Mrs. Emma R. Ramsey of Milton West Virginia, besides several relatives and friends. Her gravestone says Hassie "A." One census said the same. I have a photo of a younger gal in my old Strain photo album that may be either Hassie or sister Elizabeth, and she definitely resembles the photos believed to be her mother, Maria. Son Charles: 12 Sep 1918, I found Prof. Charles Howard Edmondson, 41, born 14 Oct 1876, teaching at the Univ of Oregon. He is married and resided at 13060 Alden (or Acola) St in Eugene, OR. On the 1920 Eugene, Lane, OR census, I found her son, Charles H Edmondson, age 43, born in IA, dad in IN and mom in VA. He resides with wife Margaret B, 29 and mother in law Martha (?) E Brown, 53. He was a Zoology Prof, at the Univ of Oregon. In 1930 they were in Honolulu, Hawaii. In Sep 1912, Charles Howard Edmondson, born in 1876, was on a ship to Vancouver, BC.
