Read More	HIATT, HAZEL VELVA—Hazel Velva Hiatt was born to Clarence Edward McCartney and Nellie Lyn McCartney on August 12, 1903, at Geneva, and passed away on May 16, 1986, at the Methodist hospital in Omaha, at the age of 82 years, 9 months and 4 days. She was one of three children in the family. Her place of birth was on a farm in Chelsea township in Fillmore county. She attended District 65 until she entered high school in Geneva. She graduated in 1920. After her graduation, on July 7, 1920, she was united in marriage to Dean L. Hiatt of Geneva, and to them nine children were born. Dean was a barber and worked in several different towns. Hazel often said on several occasions that some of her happiest memories were of the family’s days in Lushton. In 1943, the family returned to Geneva, where she resided for the remainder of her life. For several years, she and her husband owned and operated the Maryland Café. Her greatest joy in life was being a homemaker and mother. She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ for over 70 years. Her interests were varied and her wit and sense of humor reflected her Irish background. She enjoyed gardening and baseball and was a loyal fan of the Nebraska University basketball program. She was preceded in death by her parents and by her husband, Dean L. Hiatt. Also preceding her were two sons, Jack Dean and Donald Gary; two daughters, Charlotte Yvonne Garrett and Dorothy Ann Von Horne; and a grandson, Shaun Brewer. She is survived by daughters, Mrs. Howard (Jean) Burhop and Mrs. Thomas (Virginia) Darcey both of Fallbrook, Cal., Mrs. Daniel (Barbara) Bohi of Omaha and Mrs. Nancy Swanson of Geneva; a son, Thomas S. of Geneva; a brother, Francis McCartney of Tarzana, Cal., a sister, Mrs. Clifford (Arleane) Wilson of Geneva; 22 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
