Hedwig Young, a 75 year resident of Onalaska, passed away at her home on Saturday, March 3 [sic], at the age of 86. Hedwig was born on July 4, 1917 in Clear Lake, WA to Carl and Katrina Hoffman. Her family moved to Arkansas for several years, moving to Onalaska in 1925. She married Frank M. Young on May 29, 1935 in Chehalis. The couple lived in Cosmopolis, WA for 3 years returning to Onalaska. Hedwig worked at the Elmer Powell strawberry farm as a field boss... Her family moved to Arkansas for several years, moving to Onalaska in 1925. She married Frank M. Young on May 29, 1935 in Chehalis. The couple lived in Cosmopolis, WA for 3 years returning to Onalaska. Hedwig worked at the Elmer Powell strawberry farm as a field boss in the mid 1940's & 50's. During World War II she worked in the Boeing Plant in Chehalis in 1942 & 43. She was a fern picker for 20 years, and helped with her husband's construction company as a bookkeeper and office manager. Hedwig attended the Onalaska Assembly of God Church, and enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening. She was a member of the John Arnold's Ethel Grange, where she served as Secretary for 20 years, a member of the Forest Grange, and was a Gold Sheaf Member. Preceded in death by her parents, her grandson, Wayne; her brothers Mike, Carl, Louie, Joe, Frank, her sisters Anna, Frances, and Ernestine. In addition to her husband of 68 years, Frank, she is survived by her sons Melton of Onalaska, Kennith of Longbranch; her daughter Rosily Towner of Hoquiam, a special niece Olga Fickett; 6 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, April 8, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Onalaska Assembly of God Church, with committal services to follow at the Napavine Cemetery. Arrangements under the care of the Brown Mortuary, Chehalis." Note: Hedwig's death date was reported incorrectly as March 3 in the newspaper obit, but is correctly April 3 on her grave marker.
