During her early childhood, her parents were pioneering in the forests of Michigan. From them she learned the sterling qualities of faith and endurance that were the basis of the strong pioneering spirit which she brought to the prairies of Kansas when in 1874 she came to Ada as the bride of John T. White. They made the trip as far as Solomon by train, but as that was the end of the railroad, the remainder of the journey up the Solomon valley was by wagon to the home near Ada --- which Mr. White had waiting for her. Here she accepted cheerfully the hardships of frontier life. She knew the dread of the drought years --- the helplessness of the terrible grasshopper years --- the joys of the abundant years, and the despair of the depressions and the panics of the nineties. Here her children were born and around them her life centered. Three of her babies, Mabel, Frank, and Helen, died in infancy, and it was a loss never to be forgotten and in her last hours she spoke often of the babies. Her long span of years gave her a wide range of experience and let her watch Kansas change from an open prairie crossed by emigrant trains and covered wagons along the old Indian trails to the present, modern development of civilization. She watched the coming of the railroads, the telegraph, the good roads, fine homes, the automobile, radio, and airplanes. As the country grew, she learned to adapt herself to each change and meet each improvement and innovation with a quick interest and appreciation. Her interest in the world was wide and she was an eager reader of the best in literature. She watched the United States develop from the days of Abraham Lincoln down to the present through war and through peace. As a little girl she remembered the tragic days of the Civil War when her two brothers Edwin and Alton gave their lives for their country. She married a returned soldier from that same war and with him homesteaded their place in the new west along with so many other soldiers of the sixties. She watched the Spanish-American War with deep interest, and through the World War knitted faithfully, denying herself necessary food that the soldiers in France might have more. But she was always opposed to war, and the cause of peace was ever close to her heart. Spending sixty years here on the high prairie made her a true Kansan. Yet, because she was intensely loyal to all that she had known and loved and experienced, her children were never to forget that she was from Michigan. Even when she was helping them to a deeper appreciation of a Kansas sunset, she was remembering the great forests and wooded hills of her native state. While she rejoiced in the muddy waters rushing through the prairie sloughs she was recalling the murmur of clear streams running beneath the great trees on her father's homestead. Often her eyes wore the deep unfathomable pathos of those women who spend a life-time at a Kansas doorway whipped by a cruel hot wind, scanning a stark horizon. She has often said that it seemed much of her life was spent in watching for clouds and how often her children have heard her say: "If it would only rain." After the death of her husband 24 years ago, she moved with her daughters and Alfred, first to Salina, and then to Minneapolis, where she lived the last 18 years. Her entire life was devoted to her family. Shy, gentle, patient, kind, with a quiet sense of humor and a high courageous standard of daily honesty, she was ever busy with her household. She taught her children an appreciation of the better things, the love of good books, and set them a clear pattern of good living. In her quiet way she made her home the strong center toward which her children have always turned for fifty years. To have them often all at home seated at their childhood places at the long table was one of her abiding joys. Her only surviving brother, the Rev. Henry M. Ford of Brooklyn, Michigan, recently wrote to the family: She has lived to a good age and lived a very useful and worthy life. I don't see how it could be better --- mother of nine children, that in itself is remarkable and a great contribution to this generation. Besides, she has lived a peaceful, self-effacing life and been servant to all and maintained an exemplary Christian life daily. A life her children will be proud to remember and own. Through many trials and hardships on the Kansas frontiers she has patiently and successfully struggled. I have been comforted to know she has lived along with me so long after the rest of our household has gone.
