WHITE Frederick Darwin White, son of John T. White and Helen Estella (Ford) White, was born September 16, 1877 at Ada, Kansas. He passed away July 1, 1967, at the age of 89 years. A life-long resident of Ottawa county except for six years, he grew to manhood in the Ada community. He was graduated from Minneapolis High School in 1898 and later attended the University of Kansas for two years. He became a partner with his father in the grain elevator business, and engaged in farming from 1910 to 1936. In 1936 he made his home in Rice, in Cloud county, where he and Mrs. White made a home for their son, Ben, who was minister of the Methodist church in that community. In 1947 Minneapolis became his home where he has since resided. He served two terms as county treasurer of Ottawa county, and was employed by the city of Minneapolis in the program of bindweed control. Since complete retirement, he was kept busy gardening, writing income tax reports, and doing what he could to help in his church and his community. He was a member of the Methodist church, served on the school board at Ada for 21 years, and was on the Fountain Township board for a number of years. On June 1, 1905, he was united in marriage to Minnie Myrtle Hoyt of the Spring Creek community, with the Rev. J.H. Scott officiating. She passed away Nov.30, 1906 in travail. On April 19, 1910, he was united in marriage to Sarah Beatrice Hall at Salina, where they were attending Kansas Wesleyan University. Dr. R.P. Smith, president of Wesleyan, officiated at the wedding. She passed away May 26, 1956. Also preceding him in death were his parents, his brothers Frank and John; his sisters, Helen, Mable, Mary, May, and Sarah; twin infant sons by his first marriage; and a daughter, Helen. Those surviving are his son Ben of Winslow, Ill., and his brothers Ben E. White of Bonner Springs, Kansas and Alfred D. White of Kansas City, Missouri., six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Fred was a kindly man, quiet and unassuming, with a friendly handclasp and a continuing interest in people. His social instincts gave him a wide circle of friends. He had a genuine Christian character and a life-long interest in his church which gave him comfort throughout all the years. His death marks the passing of another tie with the founders of Kansas. Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 4, at 10 a.m. at the First Methodist church at Minneapolis with the Rev. L. Fred Houston officiating. Mrs. L. Fred Houston was the vocalist and Mrs. Louis Cooper was the organist. Pall bearers were Virgil Umbarger, Bob West, Norman Parsons, J.E. VanMeter, Gerald Sechrist, and harry Parsons, Jr. Burial was in Fairview cemetery at Ada. The Parks-Holtz Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
