WHITE IS DEAD A STROKE OF APOPLEXY PROVES FATAL Funeral today from home at Ada---The record of a long and useful life. Hundreds of old friends and neighbors from all parts of the county attended the funeral of John T. White at his residence near Ada this afternoon. More than half a hundred motorcars were parked in the yard during the services. The procession of vehicles from the house to the cemetery three quarters of a mile north, where his body was laid to rest, extended the entire distance. This was the tribute the community paid his memory. Hon. Winfield Freeman, an old, old friend of Mr. White, made an address at the funeral service, simple and unaffected in its reference to the old settler who had gone, eloquent with inspiration and beautiful in imagery in reference to the hope of the soul's new life. Rev. Thomas Midgley offered prayer and a mixed choir from the Ada churches sang three hymns, "Lead Kindly Light", "Don't You Know He Cares", and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere". Old veterans from the Kenesaw Post of the G.A.R. at Minneapolis and Griffin Post at Ada attended the casket as pall bearers and escort of honor and conducted the burial service at the grave. Yet only thirty were there. Seven is the total of the old soldiers at Ada who yet survive, and three or four times that many at Minneapolis. John T. White of Ada, old soldier, old settler, and one of Ottawa county's most prominent representatives in state affairs for many years, died at his home Monday morning of apoplexy. His death was a great shock to the county and state, for though his family had known his health was not the best, no suspicion was had that his condition was dangerous and the public generally had no idea that he would not live to enjoy many years of rest and peace at the close of his active life. For many years until the last two or three months, Mr.White's time has been devoted to the service of the state and he had only recently retired to give attention to his personal affairs. For years he has been away from home the greater portion of his time, and he had lately planned to enjoy home life once more in a new residence on his farm. But death allowed no time of ease and rest for him who had given so much of a busy life in public service. For more than thirty-five years Mr. White has been an Ottawa county farmer and livestock man. Although busy and prosperous, he was never too much absorbed in money making to be public spirited, and his influence has always been in county, district, and state politics. Many years ago he served as county commissioner and later for several terms as representative in the legislature. In 1909 he was appointed state grain inspector, in which office he made a splendid record. In 1910 he was elected a member of the board of railroad commissioners and when this body was replaced by the state board of public utilities the next year, he became one of that board. This year the utility board became appointive, and Mr. White was succeeded by a Democrat. Mr. White was also vice-president of the Ada State Bank. This is the brief obituary read by Judge Freeman at the funeral service: "John Tecumseh White was born in Somersetshire, England, October 3, 1818. At the age of twelve he came to America and found a home later in Michigan. In June, 1863, he enlisted in the Federal Army and served to the end of the war. In June 1872 he came to Kansas and settled on this homestead which has been his home since. On January 12, 1874, he was united in marriage with Miss Helen Ford of Hillsdale, Michigan. To them were born nine children six of whom are still living. He served his state as live stock sanitary commissioner, one term as member of the utilities board, three terms as representative in the legislature, and one year as state grain inspector." White were greatly shocked to learn of his sudden death which occurred at his home near Ada, Monday morning, May 5, 1913, about 5 o'clock. Heart trouble was the direct cause of his death. Mr. White was born October 3, 1848, in Chard, England, and came to the United States at the age of twelve. In 1863 he enlisted in the 86th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and served two enlistments, to the end of the war. He came to Kansas in May, 1878, and settled on the homestead one-half mile east of Ada which has been his home continuously since that time. January 12, 1874, he was married to Helen E. Ford at Hillsdale, Michigan. His wife and six children are still living, three children having died several years ago. Since coming to Kansas, Mr. White has always been active and prominent in politics. He was one of the first members of the original livestock sanitary commission in the early '90s. In 1904 he was elected by the Republican party to represent Ottawa county in the legislature, and served in this capacity for three terms. Under Gov. Stubbs, he was appointed a member of the railroad commission in 1910, and in 1911 when the office became elective instead of appointive, he was elected railroad commissioner and served as a member of the utilities commission until last March. Since March, Mr. White and his family have been living on the home place. Mrs. White was in Michigan at the time of her husband's death. The funeral services will be held at the home this afternoon at 2:30 and interment will be made in the Ada cemetery. Hon. Winfield Freeman of Kansas City will deliver an address at the funeral. Several members of the G.A.R., members of the Commercial Club, and a number of Mr. White's former personal friends went to Ada today to be present at the services and to pay their last respects to the dead. Mr. White was one of the best known men in the county and state, and will be mourned by all who were so fortunate as to have known him.
