Dowden home at Spirit Lake last Thursday evening. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Bishop at the Moltzen home near Dolliver Sunday afternoon and interment made in the Dolliver cemetery. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, October 23, 1918) This community was grieved last Friday morning when the news came that Etta Moltzen was dead. She was working at the F.R. Dowden home in Spirit Lake and was taken with that dread disease, Spanish Influenza. She was getting better, they thought, when pneumonia set in, and she lived but a short time. Etta was a dear girl and loved by all who knew her. She was always bright and cheerful. It is hard to understand why one so sweet and young has to be taken, but God knows what is best and we must feel He doeth all things well. Etta was 20 years old at the time of her death. She leaves to mourn her death her parents, four brothers and four sisters. One brother, Ernie, is in France which makes it very sad as Etta was always his favorite and it will indeed be sad news for him. This community extends their sympathy to the bereaved family. Funeral was held from the home Sunday afternoon. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, October 23, 1918) Miss Henrietta Moltzen Victim of Influenza Miss Henrietta Moltzen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Moltzen of near Dolliver, died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dowden in Spirit Lake on Thursday night, after but two days illness. She was taken sick on Wednesday morning and in spite of all that both Dr. C.S. Shultz of this place and Dr. Wilson of Estherville together with loving hands could do pneumonia set in when the fever broke and she passed away a short time later. Miss Moltzen was in her twentieth year, and an intimate friend of the Dowden family. She had been a resident of Emmet county all her life. She and Mrs. Dowden were neighbors and friends in girlhood life, and she spent much time in the Dowden home in late years, being considered almost as one of the family. When Mr. and Mrs. Dowden moved to Spirit Lake a few weeks ago she volunteered to come an assist them in getting settled in their new home. Besides her parents she leaves ten brothers and sisters, together with a host of friends and acquaintances to mourn her sudden demise. The remains were taken to Dolliver where the funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon. (Spirit Lake Beacon, Spirit Lake, IA, October 24, 1918)
