When a small child she with her parents moved to Livingston county, Illinois, where she received her education and grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage to James Fletcher on December 18, 1867. To this union eight children were born, two dying in infancy. In 1873, they moved from Livingston county, Illinois to Kansas, and in January, 1874 located on a homestead seven miles north-east of Glasco, the title to which has never changed. Their ideal was to live and rear their children to the highest possible standards of citizenship, and thus use their influence to make the world a better place in which to live. They endured the hardships of pioneer days, and their effort and sacrifice, intermingled with those of their neighbors, succeeded in handing down to posterity the present Kansas. Pestilence, drought, prairie fires, remote distances from market, no automobile, no telephone, no radio, no rural mail, made progress very slow, and only that determination to build for the future, backed up by the physical make-up of those of the pioneer typecould possibly endure. While making the struggle to hold down the farm, death entered the home and claimed two children, only a few hours apart, and were buried in a double grave. Just after having transformed the homestead into a comfortable home, where they could begin to enjoy a part of the fruits of their labors, death entered again, and on May 21, 1904, claimed the husband and companion. She then centered her efforts into those things that would make life better and more pleasant for her remaining children, and their posterity. Those who mourn her death are three sons, Charles W. and J. Lloyd of Glasco, and Byron J. of Orange, California; one daughter, Mrs. Eva Dalrymple of Portales, New Mexico; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. J.B. Rice of Blair, Nebraska, survives. One brother, the late J.H. Pilcher, and three sisters, preceded her in death. An entire community mourns the passing of another dearly beloved pioneer mother. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Presbyterian Church at 2:00 p.m. conducted by Rev. J. Russell Jones. Interment was in Glasco Cemetery.
