Henry Griesbach Passed Away at Fort Harrison Sunday One of the few remaining pioneers of Montana passed away on Sunday at the Veterans' hospital at Helena when Henry Griesbach was called beyond. Mr. Griesbach had been in poor health and at the hospital for several weeks. Mr. Griesbach had been a resident of this county for nearly 56 years, having squatted on his present ranch in Oct. 1879, later proving it up as a homestead. He has continuously lived there since and was one of the best known and highly respected citizens of the county. His passing will be mourned by all who knew him and his cheerful disposition will be missed by us all. He played a prominent part in the development of this county. Henry W. Griesbach was born at Soltau on the Boehmer, Kingdom of Hanover, Germany, March 24, 1846 and was a little over 89 years of age at the time of his death. He left Germany in 1959 and went to Siberia with a Missionary expedition, after which he returned to Hanover where he clerked in a general store until 1866 when he came to Utica, New York. In Utica he worked for a German grocer for some time and later enlisted in the 18th infantry and was sent to North Carolina, and from there went to Key West, Florida. Here an epidemic of yellow fever broke out in the company of 300 men and only seven survivors were left, one of whom was Mr. Griesbach. He later had charge of a federal squad that hunted moonshiners and also served in the Pittsburgh riots and was wounded in the left eye, spending six months in a hospital. He came from Greenville, N. C., to Fort Assinniboine with the 18th infantry. The trip was made to Bismark on the steamboats and the balance of the way they marched to the present site of the fort near Havre. He was discharged from service Oct. 12, 1879, and came then to his present ranch. He was united in marriage to Miss Parrish on Oct. 28, 1884, at Fort Benton. To this union were born ten children, seven of whom who have preceded him in death. One of the sons, Henry, Jr., was one of the first Chouteau county men killed in action during the world war and the local legion post is named in his honor. Besides the wife, he is survived by three daughters: Mrs. May Clark of Sweet Grass, Mrs. Doris Egan of Great Falls, and Mrs. Ilma Lohrer of Seattle, Wash. One brother, Charles Griesbach, who has lived on the home ranch for the past six years, survives him. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Louther chapel, the service will be conducted by Joel R. Benton, pastor of the Christian church in this city. The services at the grave will be in charge of the Masonic lodge, of which he has been a member for many years. Pallbearers will be members of the local post of the American Legion. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery beside the four sons and two daughters. One son, Henry, Jr., was buried in France. The relatives have the sincere sympathy of the entire community as in his death all have lost a devoted husband, father and friend.
