Walter Griesbach Shoots Self in Taking Gun From Handcar The people of this community were shocked Saturday to learn of the death of Walter Griesbach that morning, following the accidental discharge of a shotgun. The accident occurred just at the turn of the railroad track near Discum. Walter, section foreman for the Great Northern at Teton station, was patrolling the right of way with two other men and they stopped their speeder to remove an obstacle from the track. A porcupine was moving through the brush at the bottom of the railroad grade and Walter grasped the gun which lay on the car and drew it to him to shoot the animal. In some manner the gun discharged, the shot tearing through his abdomen. He was brought immediately to St. Clare hospital, but died shortly after his arrival here, virtually bleeding to death. Conscious to the very last, Walter thanked his friends for their effort to help him and sent messages to his wife and folks. He told Dr. Anderson, who attended him, that he was "going west." He had always been careful with guns and but a few minutes before the fatal accident warned his companions to be careful. Funeral services were held this afternoon from the Louther chapel in charge of the Masonic lodge and American Legion and interment was made in Riverside cemetery. Walter Griesbach was born in 1895 and had spent all his life in this vicinity except the time he spent in service during the war. He enlisted with the Marines in 1917 and was placed in the aviation corps, being sent to Fort Miami, Florida, for training. Crossing to the scene of war, he was a member of a bombing squad on the Belgian frontier and at the time the Armistice was signed his squad was preparing for a raid on Berlin. He came through the war without injury. After being mustered out, Walter returned to this county and since has been stationed at Teton with the Great Northern Railway as section foreman. About five years ago he was married to Miss Mabel Shook, of the Pleasant Valley section, who survives him. Other relatives are his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. H. Grisbach, and two sisters, Mrs. Lohrer, of Seattle, and Mrs. J. Egan of Great Falls. A sad aspect of this tragedy is the fact that this is the last of four sons of the Griesbach family, all of whom met their death by means of firearms, one, Henry, Jr., in the World War, and two dying from gunshot wounds at the home on the Teton several years ago. The Griesbach family is among the pioneers of this county. Mr. Henry Griesbach, Sr., has lived in this county more than 50 years. He was also a soldier, serving in the Franco-Prussian war in 1870, and at one time lay on the battlefield for 24 hours, wounded, before being rescued. He fought in several Indian skirmishes in the early days. The family name has been given to the local post of American Legion, honoring the first Chouteau county man to fall in the World war, Henry W. Griesbach, Jr., a brother of the decedent, who enlisted in the Canadian Princess Pat regiment and met death at Vimy Ridge before the United States had declared war. Mrs. Griesbach, senior, who has been living in Seattle with her daughter for the benefit of her health, arrived this morning for the funeral services. To the relatives the sympathy of the people of this community is extended. In the death of Walter Griesbach a fine type of manhood has been taken from our midst.
