Valentine Griesbach, Temporarily Crazed, Uses Gun With Deadly Effect Fort Benton, Sept. 21--Valentine Greisbach, age 32, member of a well-known family living near here, shot and instantly killed his 15-year-old brother, John, early Monday morning and then turned the gun on himself. He died several minutes before the county coroner and physicians arrived. It is believed that the depressed state of the older brother's mind, almost bordering on insanity, prompted the murder and suicide. When the eldest son appeared for breakfast, he told his mother that he was in a serious mood and he wanted something to eat immediately. Mrs. Griesbach persuaded him to wait and Valentine went out to the bunkhouse which he occupied with the younger brother. A few minutes after John Griesbach had returned to the bunkhouse to change clothes in preparation for school, two shots were heard, but the parents thought nothing of this as the boys frequently shot at magpies. The bus which was to take John to school arrived at the Griesbach home, and when the youth failed to appear his father went to find him. A search of the bunkhouse revealed the lifeless body of the boy in a corner of the house with a bullet hole in his head. The older son, also with a bullet hole in his head, was found lying on the bed. Ill health may have influenced the tragedy, but the parents believe that the despondency in the life of the older son was caused principally by the fact that he had been kept from participation in the World war. The notion that his friends looked up him as a shirker of his war duty is said to have preyed up his mind. He was also morbidly interested in religious matters. The bodies of the two brothers were buried side by side here Wednesday afternoon.
