Spooner Died Tuesday Morning Henry R. Spooner, 72, former mayor of Havre, for ten years a member of the city council, and a veteran of the Great Northern Railway, died at a local hospital about 8:30 o'clock Tuesday morning, news of his death being received with sincere regret by those who had known him during his 27 years in the city. Death was not unexpected, as Mr. Spooner had been in poor health all during the fall, and in the hospital four weeks, lacking a day. As word of his passing spread, tributes rising from friendships he had made, came from every side. Henry Richard Spooner was born Aug. 11, 1865, in Bloomer, Wis., the son of Albert and Mary (Cooper) Spooner. He came to Montana about 41 years ago, settling at Glasgow, where he became a brakeman for the Great Northern on July 10, 1897. Before coming to Montana he had been for two years with the Omaha railroad in Wisconsin. He had married Miss Harriet Turner at Wilson, Wis., on Feb. 22, 1889, the union having continued nearly 49 years. To them were born five children. The oldest, Alta, died when an infant. For thirteen years the Spooners lived in Glasgow, changes in railroad operating plans then bringing them to Havre, Mr. Spooner having become a conductor. He retired from the service of the Great Northern ten years ago, after a service of 30 years. He was a member of the Veterans Association of the Great Northern. Surviving him are his wife and four children; a son, Will Spooner, and three daughters, Mrs. C.B. Koepke, Mrs. William Rae, and Mrs. George A. Wright, all of Havre; and seven grandchildren. An active interest in all community and political affairs was continued by Mr. Spooner to the end of his life. He served the city of Havre as alderman for ten years, April 1922 to September 1932, when he became acting mayor of the city continuing in that position until Feb. 1933, when he was appointed mayor serving until May 1934. Since he retired from that position he had served as justice of peace of Havre. Active in Masonic work, he was past master of Glasgow lodge, A.F. and A.M.; past commander of the DeMolay Commandry of the Knights Templar; past priest of the Royal Arch Masons No. 19 at Havre; and past patron of the Havre chapter No. 30 of the Eastern Star. Mr. Spooner was one of chief instigators of the founding of the DeMolay Chapter of Knights Templar, and was its second commander. He was at the time of his death and active member of Havre chapter No. 55 A.F.
