Description	:	Herbert Earl Versaw was born the second son of Fred and Minnie Versaw on the sixth of July, 1894, near the town of Cook in Johnson County, Nebraska. He passed away at his home near Center, Colorado on February 21, 1984 having attained the age of 89 years and 7 months. When he was six years old his family moved to a ranch near Bloominqton, Nebraska. It was on this ranch that he spent most of his life up until 1926. Read More	Herbert Earl Versaw was born the second son of Fred and Minnie Versaw on the sixth of July, 1894, near the town of Cook in Johnson County, Nebraska. He passed away at his home near Center, Colorado on February 21, 1984 having attained the age of 89 years and 7 months. When he was six years old his family moved to a ranch near Bloominqton, Nebraska. It was on this ranch that he spent most of his life up until 1926. Earl, as he was called, attended country schools and high school in Franklin County, Nebraska. In 1918 Earl was drafted into the U. S. Army, trained for a short time in Camp Funston, Kansas and then sent overseas where his training was completed in France. He was then sent to the "front" where he fought with Company I of the 355th infantry of the 89th Division in the battles of the Meuse Argonne and the St. Mihiel. He was in Stenay, France when the Armistice was signed. He was returned to the USA on a hospital ship and mustered out on March 18, 1919. Earl Versaw and Florence Lenora Holland were united in marriage on March 28, 1920 at the home of her parents near Franklin, Nebraska. To this marriage were born five children. In 1926 Earl and his family moved from Nebraska to the San Luis Valley of Colorado, moving onto his farm east of Center, Colorado in the spring of 1930. Earl accepted Jesus Christ as his Saviour as a young man and dedicated the rest of his life in witnessing and serving as a Christian layman. Since 1939 he has been a member of the First Baptist Church of Hooper, Colorado. In 1964 he became a charter member of the San Luis Valley Camp of the Gideons International and since then has helped to distribute many Bibles and New Testaments to schools, motels, and resorts. Earl Versaw loved the outdoors and enjoyed its wildlife and mountains. Several times he climbed Mt. Blanca, making his last climb to the top after he was eighty years old. He also appreciated good livestock and was proud of the quality of the registered Polled Milking Shorthorn cattle that he raised. Earl Versaw was preceded in death by a grandson John Herbert Kirkpatrick and by a brother Willie of Franklin, Nebraska. He is survived by a brother Paul of Lincoln, Nebraska, a sister Mary Jensby of Davenport, Nebraska, and a sister Marian Thompson of Bayfield, Colorado. Members of his immediate family who survive him are his wife Florence and children Raymond Versaw of Alamosa, Colorado, Dorothy Kirkpatrick of Mosca, Colorado, Ardell Versaw of Center, Colorado, Lorene Byrd of Denver, Colorado, and Stanley Versaw of Pueblo, Colorado. Additionally, there are nineteen grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. Family and friends will miss him very much and mourn his passing while rejoicing in the hope of joining him in the presence of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
