A Celebration of Life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Hastings, with Pastor Greg Lindenberger officiating. Herb was born to Henry Emil and Louise Anna Johanna (Schomburg) Galitz on March 24, 1924, at home in rural Nance County, Neb. Herb graduated from high school in 1941 and joined the U.S. Army in 1943, serving with Merrill Marauders in the China-Burma-India Theater. After his discharge from the Army, he received GI training to become a mechanic. On April 4, 1949, Herb married Dolores Jacobson and they had three children, Deb, Alan, and Brian. In 1954, Herb accepted a position with Baum Iron Company as a salesperson and the family first moved to Alliance and then to Red Cloud. In 1961, Herb accepted a position as a sales agent for State Farm and the family moved to Hastings. He retired from State Farm in 1991. Herb belonged to the Masons, Scottish Rite and Shrine. He was active in the Hastings community and golf and fishing were his special pastimes. Herb was preceded in death by his wife, Dolores; his parents; and five siblings. Survivors include his children, Deb (Terry) DeVries of Kalispell, Mont., Alan (Pat) Galitz of Lincoln and Brian (Cathleen) Galitz of Riverton, Wyo.; seven grandchildren and a great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
