The story of his life follows: Herman Arthur Brenner, son of Carl and Mary Brenner was born in Exeter Township, Clay County, Kansas, October 12, 1898. Because of the death of his father when he was but a boy of eight, he was forced to assume heavy responsibility at an early age. He with his mother and brothers took up the burdens, which resulted from the death of the husband and father and heroically carried on. On June 15, 1921, he was united in marriage to Meda Macy. To this happy union, one son was born, Dennis Maynard. Mr. Brenner's entire life was spent in Clay county. After their marriage, he and Mrs. Brenner lived on a farm until they moved to Longford in 1927. He then engaged in the business of trucking until the fall of 1935, at which time he assumed the management of the Oswald Oil Company Service Station. Early in December, 1936, Herman's health began to fail. On Dec. 28 he went to the hospital at Halstead, where for over seven weeks seemingly everything was done that human hands could do to bring about the restoration of his health. However it was not in the Providence of God that his life here on earth should be extended. In the early hours of Thursday, February 18, Jesus released him from his suffering and took him to be with him. He was 37 years, 4 month and 6 days old. In the first days of his illness he was converted, and during the weeks that followed he bore constant, victorious testimony to the wonderful grace of God. Doctors and nurses marveled at his fortitude, and those who visited him were impressed with the sweetness of his spirit and his submissiveness to the will of his Heavenly Father, as was voiced in his praying, "Not my will but thine be done." While his last days were filled with intense suffering, yet a fragrance lingers which sweetens the memory of it all. There is a preciousness in the death of his saints. He was a devoted son. The last nine weeks of his mothers illness was spent in his home. He willingly did everything that could be done to alleviate her suffering. His last days were filled with great anticipation of soon meeting his mother again. As a husband he was kind, loving and thoughtful. His home was his kingdom. He was a tender father who was interested in the welfare of his son. To his many friends he was benevolent and courteous,, always ready to help the needy. He was a man who spoke his convictions and stood for right. Those left to mourn his going are his devoted companion; his son Dennis, three brothers, Sydney of Salina; Walter of Palmer; and Paul of Industry, besides many other relatives and a large group of friends. The funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Longford Evangelical Church with Rev. E. H. Dunbar in charge and he was assisted by Rev. E. J. Carry of Miltonvale. A male quartet from the Miltonvale College sang appropriate hymns. The body bearers were close friends of the Brenner family. Burial was made in the Wesleyan Cemetery. The large attendance at the final rites and the beautiful flowers expressed sincere regard and sympathy.
