He died June 17 at the Hooper Care Center at the age of 91 years. Visitation will be Thurs., June 24, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Ludvigsen Mortuary Chapel in Fremont and 6-9 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Uehling and Fri. June 25 from 9-11 a.m. at the mortuuary. Herman was born on the family farm Dec. 18, 1907 in Dodge County west of Uehling to Herman and Helene (Schole) Popken Sr. Herman spent his early years working on the family farm. On March 30, 1932 Herman was married to Margaret Osterloh at St. Paul Lutheran Church, rural Hooper. She preceded Herman in death on April 17, 1996. After Herman was married they moved to a farm at Webster where they farmed for four years, after which they moved to a farm west of Uehling in Cuming County where they continued farming. After he retired in January of 1974 they moved into Uehling. In July of 1998 he moved into the Pathfinder House in Fremont, and recenty was a resident of the Hooper Care Center. Herman was a member of St, Paul's Lutheran Church, rural Hooper, where he served on the church council. He was a member of the District 68 (Cuming County) School Board, Uehling Lions Club, was on the board of directors of the Uehling Farmers Coop. and board member of the Uehling Cooperative Credit Association which later became the Uehling State Bank. Survivors include: two daughhters. Marilyn (and husband Ray) Johnson of Uehling and Georgiene (and husband Jim) Ebel of Scribner; two sons, Robert (and Wife Joyce) Popken of Swanville. MN and Larry (and wife Sharon) Popken of Hooper; sister. Martha Evert of Hooper; brother, Lorenz Popken of Hooper; eightgrandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded ikn death by his wife, two sisters and four brothers.
