Friends may call at the Haley Funeral Home. Mr. Gray died unexpectedly Thursday while visiting relatives in Long Beach, Calif. He was a member of the American Legion. Surviving are the widow, Mary; a daughter, Wanda; one sister, Mrs. Ora Everley, Long Beach, and a brother Ernest, Salem, Ore. (The above articles about Howard's death were sent by Cheryl McIntosh) Glasco Sun, Thurs., Jan. 7, 1960, page 1: Rites Held Wednesday For Howard Finley Gray Howard Finley Gray, son of Donald and Mary Gray, was born in Glasco, Kansas, October 25, 1886, and died at the home of his sister, Mrs. Ora Everley, at Long Beach, Calif., December 31, 1959, at the age of 73 years. He lived his early life in Glasco and was a member of the Presbyterian Church. He had just completed reading the Bible, again, a few days before he died. Later he attended the schools of Glasco. He was very active in athletics and was a member of the Red Line basketball team that paved the Red Line Trail to Denver, winning every game. He was married to Kizzie Willars in 1907. She died with an infant son in 1908. They are buried in the Glasco cemetery. In 1917 he married Mary Treadway in American Falls, Idaho, at the home of his brother, Ernest Gray. During World War I he served with the 91st Division, 316 Engineers, AEF in Europe, and was discharged as a sergeant in May, 1919. A daughter, Wanda, was born in 1925 in San Diego, Calif. He was a builder by trade. Later he owned the Gray Bros. Furniture Storage and Transfer business at Encenitas, Calif. for fourteen years. Since 1946 he has made his home in Glasco. He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He leaves his widow, Mary Gray; and daughter, Wanda, of Boston, Mass; a sister,Mrs. Ora Everley of Long Beach, Calif.; and a brother, Ernest Gray, of Salem, Ore. His two nieces, Mrs. Vivian Beck and Mrs. Inez Johnston, both of Paramont, Calif., were also here attending the memorial service. He also leaves many nephews, nieces, cousins, and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 6, 1960, at 2:00 o'clock at the Christian church at Glasco, the Rev. Hugh Apple officiating. Soloist was Mrs. Hugh Apple, with Mrs. Edw. Berndt at the organ. Pallbearers were Chester Halderson, Archie Capron, Vaughn Elliott, Jesse Martin, Dave Rinehart, and Hanson Woodward. Interment was in Glasco cemetery with the Legion Honor Guard in charge. Haley Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
