Brown, 72, of Springfield, died in Community Hospital Monday, October 12, 1992 following three months illness. He was born September 2, 1920 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of Roy Burdette and Mary Evelyn (Weaver) Brown. He was born September 2, 1920 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of Roy Burdette and Mary Evelyn (Weaver) Brown. Mr. Brown graduated from Springfield City Schools and held degrees from Wittenberg University, Universithy of Chicago and Ohio State University. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Lois V. (Hoss) Brown; a daughter and son-in-law Catherine L. and Jeffrey M. Lincourt; two granddarghters, Caitlin and Melissa Lincourt all of Crown Point, Indiana; a brother, Robert W. Brown of Lafayette, Pennsylavania; a sister and brother-in-law, Judith M. and Cedric E. Adams of Glenview, Illinois; two sisters-in-law, Vera G. Cook of Springfield and Catherine Tripp of Miami, Florida; a number of close cousins, several nieces and nephews. Howard earned his Private Pilots license in 1941 through the Wittenberg College Aviation Program. He was a Lieutenant J.G. in the Navy and served as Fighter Director in the Combat Information Center aboard the U.S.S. Duncan DD 874 in the Western Pacific in 1945. He was a Science Teacher at South High School and then became Director of Special Programs for Springfield Public Schools for three decades. He also taught at Wittenberg, Central State, and University of Chicago. Howard was a member of Kiwanis and the Literary Club for 25 years. He was a member of the Northminster Presbyterian Church for 60 years, teaching Sunday School for 30 years and participated in area Presbytery Committee work. He delivered Meals on Wheels for ten years and served on the Board of Directors of the State and National Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. He was a Trustee of Springfield Daycare Center, Director and President of Tuberculosis and Public Health League, Chapter Applicant of Child Guidance Service (a predecesor of Mental Health Services), Director and Vice-President of Clark County Mental Health Board, member of the Board of Trustees of Springfield Urban League and served on the Executive Board of the United Way, Trestee and Vice President of the Clark County Historical Society. Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday in the Richards, Raff and Dunbar Memorial Home. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Northminster Presbyterian Church, with the Reverend Franklin Sparks officiating. Private interment in Vale Cemetery.
