Howard married Anne Wilson White of Portsmouth on October 10, 1906. His best man was his younger brother, Floyd White. Anne was born September 18, 1886 – the daughter of James Turner White and Sarah Wilson Jordan of Portsmouth – no kin that we've been able to determine. At the time of his wedding, Howard was working as an accountant with the Seaboard Air Line Railway of Raleigh and later, with the Norfolk and Southern as tie and timber agent. In this capacity, he was in charge of purchasing of bridge timber and lumber used in construction of the railroad. In 1909 he decided to go into the lumber business on his own in Raleigh as the Howard White Lumber Company. His business grew until it was among the largest in the South. His raw timber came from all over North and South Carolina and Georgia. Several mills converted the timber into the finished product, which was marketed in northern and eastern states. There Howard and Anne raised a family of seven children. Uncle Howard was very generous, as he helped my grandparents with hospital bills during the period of his sister (my grandmother) Bertha's hospitalization (1927) and Roland's (my grandfather) death (1922). I'm sure Bertha, as a widow with three small children, could not have survived financially without his help . During the Depression, his business went bankrupt and never recovered. He closed his business in 1940 and was employed thereafter by the City of Raleigh as the Collector of Revenue until his retirement in 1956. As a young man, he was a great supporter of baseball and was a director of the Raleigh Baseball Association. Uncle Howard was a vestryman for the Church of the Good Shepherd (Episcopal) in Raleigh, a charter member of the Rotary Club, plus he served for two years as President of the Chamber of Commerce. Uncle Howard died October 30, 1960 of congestive heart failure and kidney failure. I think he looked a lot like his grandfather, Bartlett White. Aunt Anne died in 1968 after having several strokes. She was cared for by her youngest son, Jimmie and daughter-in-law, Angie, late in life. As a child, I visited Uncle Howard and Aunt Anne often with Grandmama (Uncle Howard's sister, Lilly). It was only an hour's drive from Wilson to Raleigh and we sometimes went there to shop and would stop and have lunch with Aunt Anne. I remember her trying to make me eat boiled cauliflower and brussel sprouts which made me gag (I like them now!). She was a tiny, pretty lady with impeccable manners; Uncle Howard, gruff, portly and bald. My mother said that when she was a child Uncle Howard was very loving to her, along with his sister, Aunt Baby – more so than the other sisters – even Aunt Lilly, the sister who raised her. She was very fond of him. Several of Howard and Anne's grandchildren were around my age so I remember them as children but had lost touch with them as adults until the last few years while researching this little book. Their grandchildren called Uncle Howard and Aunt Anne "Pa-pa" and "Ma-ma" –- with equal emphasis on each syllable.
