Description	:	Ruby Gayle White, born March 13, 1885. Ruby was tall and stately, about 5'7", as tall if not taller than her father. Apparently, Ruby had a theatrical bent in her youth – a blurb in the Mathews Journal mentions that "Ladies of the Battery gave entertainment at Nelson's storehouse: Among the feature acts was a song by Miss Ruby White accompanied by Miss Virginia Billups" (Sally Bet Walker Lawson's mother). In May of 1922, Ruby married James Monroe "Bud" Shinault at the home of her mother. Bud was a widower with three children. Bud was a contractor in the Mathews area and the son of Dixon and Luranda Shinault. They lived at his home place, "Sunset Villa" on the East River near the village of Mathews Court House. Ruby was nicknamed "Arboo" by her oldest niece, Anne Wilson White. Ruby would be resting on the couch with a handkerchief over her face and playfully blow it off for Anne Wilson, saying "Ahhhh, Boo!" All of the younger generations called her "Arboo" after that. (Arboo was the way Ruby always spelled her nickname). Ruby and Bud had no children of their own so when her sister Bertha's children were orphaned in 1927, they took the younger boy, James "Bubber" Anderton, to raise. After Bud's death in 1945 Sunset Villa was sold, and Arboo and Bubber lived with her younger sister, Baby and her husband, Stanley Anderton at Bloomsdale for awhile before buying a small house near Mathews Court House in 1948. Here Bubber tended a huge garden each summer, much too big for the two of them. Arboo would can and preserve what they didn't give away to friends, family and neighbors. One such neighbor family occupied three houses – Mary Braxton Billups and her husband, Garland Hudgins lived next door to Arboo and Bubber. Her parents, Capt. Robert and Virginia Hudgins, lived next door to them. And daughter, Roberta, now lives in the third house. They are also distant cousins of ours through the Billups connection. Mary Braxton and Garland's daughters, Elaine and Roberta, grew up and spent a lot of time over at "Boo-Boo" and Bubber's. In the later years, Bubber bought Arboo a freezer, which made everything easier. When Arboo broke her hip, she went to recuperate for a few weeks in Wilson, NC under the care of Bubber's sister, Elizabeth (my mother). Arboo was an excellent patient and was soon back in Mathews, moving around expertly with a walker. Bubber never married and lived with Arboo until her death, (her 2nd cerebral hemorrhage) on June 22, 1973, at age 88. She is buried in Christ Church Cemetery with her husband, Bud, and his family. Interestingly enough, Arboo and Bubber didn't use each other's nicknames and called each other "James" and "Ruby", respectively.
