He was the youngest of three children born to his mother, Vernie Lee Coker, and his father, the late Bob Coker. Gene was salutatorian of his class of 1968. He received a scholarship and attended USC. He lived in St. Matthews until his death. He was a member of Congaree Baptist Church, where he served in the capacities of deacon, superintendent of Sunday School, organist and pianist. He used his many talents for the glory of God. He was employed by Home Depot. Survivors include his mother, of St. Matthews; wife, Nora Hoffman Coker, of the home; four stepchildren and their spouses: Judy and Byron Livingston, of Swansea; Boyd and Valeria Brazell, of Swansea; Donna and Rick Hach, of Lawrenceville, Ga; and Brian and Amanda Brazell, of Gaston; 11 step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; two sisters and brothers-in-law: Joy and David Barr, of Orangeburg; Faye and Frank Haigler, of St. Matthews; three nieces and their husbands: Debonie and Stan Funchess, of Rowesville; Chrystel and Chris Rogers, of Orangeburg; and Tomette and Richard Edgemon, of Orangeburg; a nephew and his wife, Shan and Bonnie Benton, of St. Matthews; five great-nieces and two great-nephews; and other relatives and many friends. He was predeceased by a nephew, Duane Barr. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Sunday at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home in North and other times at the home, 899 Old Belleville Road, St. Matthews. Memorials may be made to Congaree Baptist Church Piano Fund, 299 Old Belleville Road, St. Matthews, SC 29135. The family would like to extend a special thanks to SC Oncology, Dr. McElveen and Dr. Kim DeWitt, Mary Russell and Nancy Koon, and Tri-County Hospice.
