Description	:	Hugh "Barney" Swift, 82, of Akron, Iowa, passed away Thursday, May 24, 2007 at the Akron Care Center in Akron. Services were held Wednesday, May 30, 2007 at First Baptist Church in Akron. Pastor Damon Green will officiate. Hugh Worthington Swift was born January 10, 1925 in Akron, Iowa, the son of Luvern and Selma (Nelson) Swift. Barney attended school in Akron and graduated from Akron High School in 1943. He enlisted in the United States Army on June 10, 1943. He was stationed in Northern France and Central Europe during WWII. He was honorably discharged on December 10, 1945. Barney returned to Akron, where he worked for several businesses including the Akron Creamery, Dirk's Motor Company, Silverberg's, and for Plymouth Co-Op. Barney was united in marriage to Virginia Rae Tucker on March 25, 1946 in Akron, Iowa. In 1970, they moved to Benson, AZ and later to Tombstone, AZ. Barney and his wife owned and operated Swift Chevron Service Station. After retiring, they moved back to Akron in December of 1989. They were residents of the Ridgewood Apartments in Akron. Virginia passed away July 10, 2006. Barney was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Akron. He was a 60-year member of the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron where he had served as a financial officer. He was also a member of the Akron Lion's Club. He enjoyed his times at the Akron Senior Center where he served on the Board of Directors of many years. Barney was a former member of the Masonic Lodge, Sioux City Consistory, and the Shrine Temple in Tucson, AZ. He loved the times spent with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Survivors include his daughter-in-law: Beverly Netley and her husband James of Dakota Dunes, SD; 2 grandchildren: Michael Swift and his wife Rachel of Oshkosh, WI, and Jennifer MacArthur and her husband Jonathan of Jacksonville, FL; 2 great-granddaughters: Rebecca and Elizabeth MacArthur; a brother: Burton "Lefty" Swift and his wife Arlene of Akron, IA; a brother-in-law: Ellis Tucker of Akron, IA; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of over 60 years, Virginia; a son: Scott Swift on August 8, 1987; a brother: Charles Swift; and two sisters: Lois Klemme and Genevieve Earner.
