Description	:	Ida Belle Wolf Besst was born near Turkey River, Clayton Co. Iowa 18 Mar 1857. Her father, Lewis C. Wolf, came with his son from their home in eastern Iowa, and settled in Yellowbanks early in 1871 in what was then called "Dry Hollow". Her mother,Rebecca Walker Wolf, left their home near Dyersville where the nearest railroad station was located, with her children and went by train to Souix City, Iowa where L.C. Wolf met them.They traveled the rest of the way to Norfolk NE by covered wagon. They lived in a dugout with the front being made... Read More	Ida Belle Wolf Besst was born near Turkey River, Clayton Co. Iowa 18 Mar 1857. Her father, Lewis C. Wolf, came with his son from their home in eastern Iowa, and settled in Yellowbanks early in 1871 in what was then called "Dry Hollow". Her mother,Rebecca Walker Wolf, left their home near Dyersville where the nearest railroad station was located, with her children and went by train to Souix City, Iowa where L.C. Wolf met them.They traveled the rest of the way to Norfolk NE by covered wagon. They lived in a dugout with the front being made of logs. Belle remembered that one time they had to melt snow for the horses. and she had to carry the pails of water to the horses, being tied to one end of a rope, the other being tied to one corner of the house. Ida Belle was a young girl of 15, but she helped her father with crops dropping just 3 kernels of corn in each hill. The next summer the grasshoppers ate the crop and her father and family moved to Decatur, NE. Ida Belle remained and worked for different families in Norfolk until her marriage to L. M. Besst 18 Mar 1876.They had 5 children, Clyde C.,Charles LeRoy "Roy", Harry Delmar, Mabel Clair Carter,and Reno. Ida Belle was a strong young woman with courage. She said that she is half Irish and half German and she attributed whatever qualities of courage she has to her great grandparents who came from Ireland in early part of the eighteenth century walking from Baltimore to Morgantown VA where they opened a store. In a interview,Ida Belle says the the "prairie fires were terrible. They often came near us and even after my marriage, we were threatened by them. When my oldest child was a baby, I had to carry him out on the plowed ground where he would be safe, and then I hurried out to fight the prairie fire which was approaching our home." Ida Belle kept a scrapbook for her daughter's son, her grandson, of newspaper clippings of historical interest. She wrote in this scrapbook that General Robert E. Lee was Carroll's great great Grandmother's cousin.
