Description	:	Leander Madison Besst was born 1 Oct 1848 on a farm in Madison County Indiana. He was one of a large family of 10 children of "Uncle Johnnie" Besst. Madison was three years old when his parents moved to Clayton County, Iowa, and lived there until he was 18 years old. He moved with his parents to Norfolk, Nebraska in 1867. Read More	Leander Madison Besst was born 1 Oct 1848 on a farm in Madison County Indiana. He was one of a large family of 10 children of "Uncle Johnnie" Besst. Madison was three years old when his parents moved to Clayton County, Iowa, and lived there until he was 18 years old. He moved with his parents to Norfolk, Nebraska in 1867. At the time the Besst family arrived in Norfolk, the nearest rairoad point was Columbus. From Norfolk to Columbus, the round trip required 3 to 5 days by ox team. On Oct 1, 1869, when he was 21 years old, he took a homestead 2 miles west of his father's and resided there until his death. He married Ida Belle Wolf, daughter of Louis and Rebecca (Walker) Wolf on March 6, 1876. They had 5 children, Clyde, Roy, Harry, Reno and one daughter, Mabel Carter. Madison was well thought of in his community. He was considered as a leader who kept the best interests of the community before him. Grasshopper raids, blizzards and drouths made their destructive visits to that area and the family struggled on. Soon after he was married, Leander Madison Besst was instrumental the building of a school house, the Besst school, which was also used as a place to hold religious services in which he took a profound interest. He owned 320 acres of improved land on which he had a beautiful home, an orchard, and a large tract of forest trees. He was a member of the Church of Christ, Scientist, and was an independent.
