JIM" PURNELL PASSED AWAY HERE Died At Home Of Son On First Street Tuesday FUNERAL RITES HELD YESTERDAY AFTERNOON Isaac James Purnell, more familiarly known to his hundreds of warm friends throughout this section as "Captain Jim", passed away at the home of his son, Ronald Purnell on First street, the result of complications, on Tuesday afternoon of this week. "Captain Jim", who was seventythree years of age, was the son of the late John Fisher Purnell and Nancy Hickman Purnell, both of early pioneer families in this section. He was born in Crisfield where he spent virtually his entire life. During most of his days, until illness rendered him almost completely inactive, he had been engaged in some branch of the seafood industry. In early life, before he became greatly interested in the seafood business, Mr. Purnell served for several years as a blacksmith. Later on he and his brother, the late Edward Purnell, formed a partnership and entered into the seafood business under the firm name of E. Purnell and Brother. This partnership continued for a number of years during which time the business was quite successful, due doubtlessly to the tireless efforts of the two brothers, but was finally dissolved in the early 1900's. During the latter years of his life until health failed, "Captain Jim" had operated a retail seafood business near the waterfront at the foot of Main street. A number of months ago Mr. Purnell was taken seriously ill and spent sometime in the Marine Hospital in Baltimore. However, he seemed to repond readily to treatment and was later able to return to his home here. He was well-known and loved throughout this section by all with whom he came in contact and leaves a host of friends in whose hearts his place can never be filled. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Hilda Purnell Stevenson, of Baltimore and three sons, Keral Purnell, also of Baltimore, George Purnell, of Millerburg, Pa. and Ronald Purnell, of Crisfield. One brother, J. Fletcher Purnell, of Washington, also survives. Funeral services, in charge of Rev. C. M. Elderdice, pastor of the Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church, were held from the home of his son, Ronald Purnell, yesterday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. Interment was beside the grave of his wife in the Crisfield cemetery.
