Description	:	Jack Edward Davis was a lifelong dealer in antiquities. His business was located West of Tipton Indiana on the North side of State Highway 28 close to county road 500 West. His business was called the Independence Trading Post and was located at the site of the historical one room school house formerly known as the Independence School. Read More	Jack Edward Davis was a lifelong dealer in antiquities. His business was located West of Tipton Indiana on the North side of State Highway 28 close to county road 500 West. His business was called the Independence Trading Post and was located at the site of the historical one room school house formerly known as the Independence School. Jack led a simple life without central heating and lived in a loft area in the old school. Cool good tasting mineral water was supplied by a hand pump located in front of the school building. The barn that sets on this property was moved from the old Van Buskirk property in 1963 to the present day location. Independence village had been established by the VanBuskirks as a political free zone, thus the name Independence. The building complex was always kept in good repair and was an asset to the community. In the 1960's he kept Ertle's soda pop in a cooler that neighbors and their children would buy for 5 cents per bottle. making the business a popular place to wet one's whistle. Jack was single all his life. He was known as a hard bargainer at regional auctions, and often brought home the items he wanted to resell (or keep) at his business. In the 1970's. Jack brought into his business Dan Hinkle who was a neighbor and collaborator in running the day to day affairs of the business. Before Jack passed, the business had been purchased by Dan who served as Jack's caretaker until the time of his death at the business. Early in his life his relatives attempted to discourage him from making a living selling antiques, but, he persisted and became a regional expert in the old ways and the things that our forefathers created to make their living in the central Indiana region. He started picking and salvaging old things at an early age at his parents farm home in Arcadia Indiana. Jack is survived by his brother Ron's children. Jack's father Eddie, and his mother Madeline, his sister Joyce Ann, and his brother proceeded him in death. Various cousins to his parents also survive. Before his death, he was baptized by a minister who was asked to perform the Christian ritual. Jack was given Christian burial at Fairview Cemetery on September 4th 2018 with friends and family attending.
